President Vladimir Putin told German Chancellor Angela Merkel by phone on Monday that Moscow was ready to provide more details to bolster Russia’s version of events. Moscow says Ukraine deliberately provoked Russia to trigger a crisis.

Ukraine, which on Monday night introduced martial law for 30 days in parts of the country it deems most vulnerable to an attack from Russia, said its ships did nothing wrong and that it wanted the West to impose new sanctions on Moscow.

Some of the more than 20 Ukrainian sailors held by Russia for straying into Russian waters appeared on Russian state TV on Tuesday admitting to being part of a pre-planned provocation. Kiev denounced what it described as forced confessions.

The Ukrainian sailors are expected to appear in a Russian court later on Tuesday. Their vessels were captured by Russian forces at sea near the Kerch Strait, which is the only outlet to the Sea of Azov and controls access to major Ukrainian ports.

The FSB said it had information showing the sailors’ mission had been pre-planned by the Ukrainian government and that two intelligence officers from Ukraine’s SBU security service had been on board to coordinate the provocation.

Vasyl Hrytsak, the head of the SBU, confirmed that his officers were on board to support the military and said one of them had been seriously wounded after Russian aircraft fired missiles at the Ukrainian vessels.

looks to me there are underlying issues here, not just some Putin probing of Ukraine.
western press is useless in getting the info -RT and Sputnik tell one side.

I'm getting the idea though Ukriane has been doing a bit of probing on their own

In these "spy games", we may never learn the whole truth.

IMO, Pootie wants to take the Ukraine, too.

He just advanced one of his pawns on the chessboard ;-)

no. He would gladly take Donbass, but Uk international integrity is pretty much locked in
unless he can peel off a bit of border by moving the lines.. maenwhile the war acts like a buffer state

Recall Crimea was a "forced move" ( like in chess) for access to Sevastopol after the continual threats of not renewing the lease.
Recall we ginned up the Euromaidan protests into a full scale revolution.

Recall NATO expansion..etc etc.. it's why Poland and Ukraine and the rest are now bleating about Putin "expansion"

( Europe is even worse thanks to Trump getting the fact Putin is becoming completely detached
from the west -moving closer and closer to China) I mean strategic military as well as economic alliances!

You have to get the idea of the Euromaidan though for this to make any sense.

You know capturing/controlling a space on the chessboard can be more valuable than taking an opponent's piece.

My memory is hazy, it's all so complex & with nuanced moves. I THINK the Crimean Referendum was before the annexation
but I can't be sure without research.

But the big thing is these Orange and "color" Kyiv characters figure Ukraine must be part of Europe security.
Russia pushed back because it does not want a European Ukraine -hostile to it -on it's borders.

Idelly Ukraine should be a neutral buffer state
