6 ways you're wasting gas

It's not easy to break bad driving habits, but if you don't, the money you lose on gas could wind up breaking your bank.

NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- With all the worry over fuel prices, you'd think drivers would do whatever they can not to waste gas. But look around and you'll see lots of them tooling around as if they owned their own tanker fleet. One of them might be you.

Here are six ways drivers typically waste gas every on every trip:
1. Racing away from green lights

When the light turns green, you don't have to take off as quickly as possible. That pedal under your right foot is called the "gas pedal" for a good reason. The more you press down on it, the more gas you're pumping into the engine.

I already practice all those things Damo. I do a few short hops but them I am partially disabled. I even have a handicapped hangy down thing. I have avoided those all of things for years. Guess I am a true conservative ;)
btw I do get honked at for not racing away at red lights in the big city. They can kiss my conservative butt.

I get all the good parking spots! :clink:
 
I disagree with #4.....

I tail-gate Semi's quite often and have recieved INCREDIBLE gas mileage :)

It's called riding the slip-stream.

I was going to post something similar given drafting means your car doesn't have to push the air out of the way.... though it does tend to piss off the person in front of you.

That's why I pick Semi's to do it too. They never even realize I'm there half the time. I'm in a tiny little Escort.
 
I do race away from green lights. I do this to put the other cars behind me. Its a safety thing here in Vegas. Keep as much distance between you and the other drivers. They are nuts here.

I hit the gas hard when the light goes green because I like to win the race to the other side.

We ARE all racing.... right???

Yeah, they all like to drag race at green lights for some reason..

actually here I can do this and make the next light, saving me from just idling at a stop sign.Thus saving gas.
