so now we just ditch the ENTIRE ERA of Exploration ? :toilet:

I guess I am just not noticing that it is still used frequently.
I usually just hear the term "heat wave", which is generally associated here with Santa Ana winds in the fall or late summer.

You're in So Cal right? You guys have summer year round which is why you probably don't hear the term. SF is NOT like that.

Republican Karin Housley, a state senator running to represent Minnesota in the U.S. Senate, compared then-first lady Michelle Obama to a “chimp” in 2009.
In an April 2009 Facebook post, Housley criticized the first lady’s posture when she met Queen Elizabeth II.
“Michelle is soooo far from cool. Don’t we expect our First Ladies to at least stand up straight? (And my dear sister, know the proper etiquette and DO NOT TOUCH THE QUEEN!),” Housley wrote on her Facebook wall.
In the comment thread on her post, Housley said the chimpanzee in the 1951 film “Bedtime for Bonzo,” starring then-actor Ronald Reagan, likely had better posture than Mrs. Obama.
“I do miss Nancy Reagan. Ronald even more. Speaking of Bedtime for Bonzo, I think even that chimp stood up straighter than Michelle,” Housley wrote. “Uh-oh, someone is going to make a comment.”

They want to not be scolded. Waaaaaah waaaaah!😪

I'm born and raised in CA and I've never heard the term...….shrugging shoulders.

Northern VA myself, term used frequently there. If Indians start having a problem with it I have no problem finding another symbol for that weather.

I think the navigator was a Muslim.

Beauty, eh?

You know the biggest lie we were told about Columbus when we were kids? That he was some kind of visionary who knew the earth was spherical, while almost everyone else supposedly thought the earth was flat.

In hindsight, I am amazed a lie of that magnitude was being taught to school children. Especially since humans have known or surmised the earth was spherical going back to the ancient Greeks.

I literally cannot even recall the last time I heard a friend, relative, or colleague here use the term.

I did hear it growing up on the East Coast decades ago, so maybe there is some geographic bias in how frequently the term is used.

More places than just the government recognize those holidays.

For instance, greedy financial institutions are closed as well...…...

Sure and government workers and bank tellers with all their fluff holidays are absolutely put upon that they have to work Easter Monday when private businesses often close.

No question he was historically significant and a great navigator.
I think what modern historical consensus is also concluding is that he was cruel and despotic to both natives and to Spanish settlers.
I am not going to lose sleep over whether we keep or ditch the holiday.

I believe you are wrong on that consensus about Columbus. This is what I was referring to on the revisionist history of him. I think much of the modern criticisms of Columbus are derived from modern misinterpretation or primary sources.

I accept that possibility.
I am not a historical scholar, and have not invested the time researching and studying this to be in a position to be the definitive expert.

For once he is right, in 240BC Eratosthenes managed to calculate the circumference of the Earth without even leaving Egypt.

I've never seen a "private business" close on Easter Monday.

However, I have seen them open on Thanksgiving day....putting profit over employees spending time with their families.

Oh and there are some private business that NEVER close i.e. 7/11

Should the entire country shut down Thanksgiving day? No stores open, no football games, no gas stations open nothing

Strange because all the ones I have worked for close on Easter Monday or give half the staff friday and half the staff monday.

I take your word for it that the term is widely and frequently used in the bay area.

I have never personally heard anyone complain that the term is dehumanizing and offensive.
I wonder if the person who wrote your article is a white person just looking for an angle to write an interesting article? Writer's block and publication deadlines can make people end up writing all sorts of crap-ola!

I'm sure he'll say it was a "liberal" writer.

I wouldn't take his word for shit...….he's started this thread with a right wing agenda to create a false equivalency.
