True, but I doubt most of them decided late (the last week). Most were faithful Democratic voters. The difference is that in 2016 both candidates had negative ratings and more people had trouble deciding. I think for some it could have been nothing more than trying the "new" guy. Many recent presidential elections were won by the newer candidate versus those who had been hanging around the longest (Obama, George Bush, Bill Clinton, Trump). Could could more easily play the "outsider" role than Hillary.

First of all, people with active brain cells vote ideology, policy, and issues, not perception of personal attributes.
How is it humanly possible to require a last minute decision?
Second, the personalities come and go.
The parties stand for something, and it's impossible for a person of intelligence not to have an opinion of which ideology is closer to his/her own.
Independents are like men with no balls. They can be comfortable straddling a fence.
