You all do that, whether it's claiming to be "a small business owner" so your crackpot economic views can be validated, whether it's claiming to be "married to (insert minority group here)" so your crackpot views on race can be validated, whether it's claiming you are "a veteran" so your crackpot views on foreign policy and defense can be validated, or whether it's claiming to be a victim of Obamacare so your crackpot views on health care are validated.
All you're seeking is validation, and doing so through unverifiable personal anecdotes belies the hollowness and emptiness of your beliefs.
If you have to invoke your own personal anecdotes to carry your argument, you've lost the argument.
