No, not overkill.
She has been charged with no crime.
But that doesn't mean that she bears no responsibility for her actions.
What she did was unacceptable.
Now she is being rejected.
Nobody is surprised, and neither should she be.
She should get counseling.
She's messed up. She couldn't play nice with others so her play time is being taken away.
Most people learn this as children.

Get real. She has so much money she never needs to work again. She is not being destroyed. Her entertaining persona is. And it should be. She crossed a forbidden line.
Nothing is happening to her that she did not bring on herself.
And no, our culture has not become 'a vicious, unforgiving, didactic ( patronizing) hatefest.' PART of our society has become that, the part which elected Trump. There are still plenty of us who are abhorred by such behavior. We shun that. We reject it. We voted in the majority against that. The hateful part of society has become too great. We need to reject Roseanne and any who carry on like her. We need to find our compassion and empathy again.
Let us suppress the thoughts and sentiments that are hurtful.
Let us revel in the love of fellow humans, caring and consideration for others, everything Roseanne does not show.

she's not being rejected, she's being used. Once upon a time when you heard someone say something you found offensive you either confronted them or ignored them, but you didn't show your own insecurity by letting them know they hurt your feelings.

Trump has not paid a high enough price for his hateful tweets. Has not paid a high enough price at all.
He should be out of a job, rejected by all, unable to make a deal, not wanted on TV.
That's what a fully benevolent society would do with someone like that.
We have too many uninformed, misinformed haters.
