Los Angeles painting city streets white in bid to combat climate change

You most definitely missed the point. But a genius, you are not.

Sad, but not surprising that you can't wrap your tiny mind around two concepts at once. Yes, the white roofs can decrease the need for electricity during the summer. However, the white roofs will keep on reflecting the sunlight during the winter, requiring more energy use in the winter. More than offsetting the decreased demand during summer. The study also said overall the white roofs made global warming worse by decreasing cloud cover.

I'll try one more time to help you understand, but I doubt it will sink in. One of the first things the article said, in very large print:
What do white roofs have to do with painting the roads white? And how much heating is needed in Los Angeles in the winter?

You certainly demonstrated that!
That you don't have a clue? Why do you guys always opt to highlight snippets that seem to support your flawed argument, but redact the glaring contradictions to same that appear in the same articles?

Since you're a fan of large font...

"Between 2 and 4 percent of the gross global warming since the Industrial Revolution may be due to urban heat islands," said Mark Z. Jacobson, a professor of civil and environmental engineering who led the study. He and graduate student John Ten Hoeve compare this with the greenhouse gas contribution to gross warming of about 79 percent and the black carbon contribution of about 18 percent.
Black carbon is a component of the soot created by burning fossil fuels and biofuels and is highly efficient at absorbing sunlight, which heats the atmosphere.
Gross global warming is the total amount of warming that has taken place from all sources, mainly greenhouse gases, black carbon particles and heat islands. Net global warming is gross global warming minus the cooling effect of light-colored atmospheric particles that reflect sunlight back into space, which offsets about half of global warming to date. Net, or observed, global warming is what is typically reported in the media.
For the mentally impaired....less air conditioning during peak heat waves equates to less need for electricity generated by burning fossil fuels.

I don't think you need a degree in anything to understand the concept.

It doesn't get very cold in San Diego........

Mark Twain’s observation that it is wiser to keep your mouth shut and let people think you are stupid than to open it and prove them right, applies in spades here to the likes of Althea, Desh et al.

Says the guy who posts links that directly refute his claims?

That's not a very insightful observation where Althea is concerned.

When its 115 degrees in Arabia the tarmac can easily be 130 degrees or more.. and it takes your breath away.

Anything that reflects the heat or provides shade is enormously helpful.

I had a Western exposure back patio in one of the houses I built.. It was absolutely horrible.. until I had a pergola built.. my utility bill went down by 50% and the house was far cooler.

Even a well placed shade tree like an Acer Maple can make a huge difference.

This really sums up fools like Althea.

Yes....yes. Keep moving farther from the discussion.

Maybe we'll forget the topic. Just the way trump filibusters every question ever posed to him on the rare occasions that the speaks to reporters, never answering the actual question.

Thanks Ma Walton for that insightful observation. Give my love to John Boy!

I will say this once more and I'll leave you two to your circle jerk. Los Angeles roads are mainly concrete hence grey already. So how the fuck does painting a grey surface another shade of grey do anything? I wonder how long it will be before they want to ban black tyres in Los Angeles because they discolour their pristine light grey roads?

How Painting Roofs White Can Help 'Turn Off The World For A Year ...

May 30, 2012 - A NASA survey of New York City's rooftops last July showed that dark, heat-absorbing rooftops were up to 42 degrees F hotter than white rooftops. And that difference in heat can make a big difference in on-site energy use; painting a roof white can reduce air conditioning demand as much as 20 percent.

What about winter time?
