A flat roof in the midday sun receives about 1,000 watts of sunlight per square metre. A dark roof will absorb most of this energy, heating the roof and underlying building, as well as the surrounding air.

Hey numbnuts, I live in an area where snow blindness is common between November and March. White surfaces will cause glare.
I know that.. I lived in Switzerland for a year.. but the white buildings of the Islands reflect heat .. they are not blinding glare.

There's a difference between buildings and an actual roadway. And white roadways are a recipe for accidents.

Does anybody click on source links in articles other than me? They are a light gray. It is the same thing they use on mobile home roofs. It is called Kool Seal.

Since people are bitching about white streets causing glare and accidents, then clearly no you didn't know they were light gray. They are also painting them to mitigate the effects of the 150° pavement on pedestrians but I am sure you knew that too. They are also doing it to mitigate the need to irrigate as it drops temperatures in the area beyond just the road surface, but I am sure you knew that too. They are also doing it so adjoining property owners will not have to consume as much electricity cooling their homes, but I am sure you knew that too.
Only in California, until every place in the USA follows suit 15 years later.
Like wholesome food, cleaner gasoline, entertainment politicians, surfing, triathlons, tech culture, sushi, fake boobs... It's a mixed bag.
