US President Trump threatens tariffs, to fulfill a campaign promise. Economic detrime

sear

serene
"We'll be imposing tariffs on steel imports, and tariffs on Aluminum imports." "25% for steel, it'll be 10% for Aluminum." U.S. President Trump
The reported consensus on this is that it will be a very substantial net $economic negative.

Whatever "benefit" Trump hallucinates will result will according to media reports, be vastly overshadowed by retaliating tariffs from our trading partners, and higher prices for U.S. consumers.

BUT !!

These tariffs have been promised, but not yet signed into law.

So !!

Will rational advisors get to Trump in time? Talk sense into Trump? Inform him that making good on his threat will harm the U.S.?
Or will these threatened tariffs become U.S. law, with the obvious economic consequences to follow?

I think his "advisors" are caught up in a gigantic storm of chaos and anarchy. I doubt there is much they can do to stem the crap this disgusting man-child is heaving at our nation...and the world.

This apparently is an area where he can move with minimum restrictions.

I hope whoever can influence him...influences him in the right direction, but the fact that it is still a 50/50 proposition tells you most of what you have to know about the issue.

We are screwed.

Hi supporters are uneducated so he knew he could make stupid promises and they would buy it.

Aluminum and steel tariffs are a very smart move. Thank you, Mr. President.

"all lib'ruls should have one..." PP
a) What's a "lib'ruls"?

b) Probably.

c) Particularly the bald ones.
"...you are pretty much screwed..." PP
Indeed so, as FA #2 has observed.

1) And I consider the Republican party collectively at fault for it.

2) If you are a U.S. citizen, you too will suffer the harm inflicted by the pending Trump trade war:
- higher consumer prices
- higher unemployment
- degraded economy
" ... trade wars are good, and easy to win." Donald J. Trump @realDonaldTrump 18/03/02 02:50

The tariffs will hurt the automobile business, hurt consumers and increase prices... also the boat business and all breweries.

Well, if you're an anti-CO2 socialist, you should be applauding higher prices on cars and boats. What's up with that?

Do you even know how much an aluminum beer costs? ... by how many cents or dollars will the price of an empty beer can increase?

What should our response be to foreign gov't, subsidized goods?

You assume I am an anti C02 socialist... so you are wrong again.

Who cares about Trump's fake patriotism. Until American businessmen, management and fortune 500 companies start demonstrating that,
our middle and lower classes will continue a downward trajectory while the crème is skimmed by the investor class and the inequality gap
widens even more into this feudal state. Why isn't Trump calling the right people out for the problem instead of blaming government bogeymen
or foreign countries? Hmmm?

You write this as if he knows it's bad butt he's only doing it because he said he would on the campaign trail. Have you not followed who his advisors are and the white papers they put out during the campaign and after? Look up Peter Navarro. There's also a reason he sent Wilbur Ross out to the various talk shows. You haven't been following closely if this is a surprise to you

How are tariffs going to help the American worker or the American consumer?
