AFRICAN IMMIGRANTS HAVE THE HIGHEST ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT IN THE US

The Force is With Me
Here is a headline you won't see on Fox news or a national news station..

Africans have the highest educational attainment rates of any immigrant group in the United States with higher levels of completion than the stereotyped Asian American model minority. It is not only the first generation that does well, as estimates indicate that a highly disproportionate percentage of black students at elite universities are African or the children of African immigrants.

In an analysis of Census Bureau data by the Journal of Blacks in higher education, African immigrants to the United States were found more likely to be college educated than any other immigrant group. African immigrants to the U.S. are also more highly educated than any other native-born ethnic group including white Americans. Some 48.9 percent of all African immigrants hold a college diploma. This is slightly more than the percentage of Asian immigrants to the U.S., nearly double the rate of native-born white Americans, and nearly four times the rate of native-born African Americans.

In 1997, 19.4 percent of all adult African immigrants in the United States held a graduate degree, compared to 8.1 percent of adult whites and 3.8 percent of adult blacks in the United States, respectively. This information suggests that America has an equally large achievement gap between whites and African/Asian immigrants as it does between white and black Americans.

Of the African-born population in the United States age 25 and older, 86.4% reported having a high school degree or higher, compared with 78. 9% of Asian born immigrants and 76.5% of European born immigrants, respectively. These figures contrast with 61.8% percent of the total foreign-born population.

Data show Nigerians the most educated in the U.S.

BACHELOR'S AND BEYOND
In America, Nigerians' education pursuit is above rest
Whether driven by immigration or family, data show more earn degrees

For Woodlands resident David Olowokere, one of Nigeria's sons, having a master's degree in engineering just wasn't enough for his people back home. So he got a doctorate.

His wife, Shalewa Olowokere, a civil engineer, didn't stop at a bachelor's, either. She went for her master's.

The same obsession with education runs in the Udeh household in Sugar Land. Foluke Udeh and her husband, Nduka, both have master's degrees. Anything less, she reckons, would have amounted to failure.

"If you see an average Nigerian family, everybody has a college degree these days," said Udeh, 32, a physical therapist at Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center. "But a post-graduate degree, that's like pride for the family."

Nigerian immigrants have the highest levels of education in this city and the nation, surpassing whites and Asians, according to Census data bolstered by an analysis of 13 annual Houston-area surveys conducted by Rice University.

Although they make up a tiny portion of the U.S. population, a whopping 17 percent of all Nigerians in this country held master's degrees while 4 percent had a doctorate, according to the 2006 American Community Survey conducted by the U.S. Census Bureau. In addition, 37 percent had bachelor's degrees.

I don't doubt that. This is purely anecdotal but I get African immigrants/refugees referred to my bidness time to time from Catholic Social Services. They are some of the most polite, well behaved kids and parents I encounter. It's obvious to me they are grateful to be here and are making the best of the opportunity they've been given.
You probably don't want to hear this with your daughter in the army but the worst group of kids I encounter (anecdotally) are those with parents in the military. It's no wonder to me they're called 'military brats'.

Edit: I'm currently treating a russian family that recently immigrated here. There's somewhat of a language barrier but we get by with google translate plus their english improves almost every time I see them.
They're basically the same as the African immigrants. Super nice people.

You don't want to ask me about those from Arab nations though .

With all due respect, what you think I don't want to hear is kinda' funny. My daughter isn't an army brat, she's an Army leader with an advanced degree and near the top of her class. Maybe you didn't want to hear that. :0)

Her daughter spends about half the year with my wife and I to ensure that she's well-rounded.

Not sure what your 'bidness' is but I would expect that those sent to you by Social Services aren't among the best prepared at the time. Fortunately, there are far more cogent and statistical arguments to make about their level of education then anecdotal observations from people with political agendas. I say that with no disrespect for your observations, but irrespective of those observations, the fact remains that African immigrants to this nations become some of the best educated.

Random but I thought the term 'Army brat' was used to describe someone who grew up on various military bases and nothing to do with behavior?

You are correct but my colleagues have stated the same thing as I have. Anchorage has a fairly large military community and for some reason the child dependents tend to be the worst behaved.

They lack a sense of stability and community.

That's part of the cross that our military soldiers have to bear.

African children go to schools where political correctness is non existent and the parents are far stricter as well!!

this will probably be construed as racist but im going to say it anyway :P

A degree from a shithole university from Africa may not be the equivalent from a degree from an American or Japanese university XD

It isn't just racist, it's also incredibly ignorant.

It Isn't Just Asian Immigrants Who Thrive in the U.S.

According to Census data, more than 43 percent of African immigrants hold a bachelor’s degree or higher -- slightly more than immigrants from East Asia. Nigerian immigrants are especially educated, with almost two-thirds holding college degrees -- a significantly higher percentage even than Chinese or South Korean immigrants. African immigrants are also very likely to hold advanced degrees, many of which are earned at U.S. universities. By many measures, African immigrants are as far ahead of American whites in the educational achievement as whites are ahead of African-Americans.

That education translates into higher household income. Nigerian-Americans, for instance, have a median household income well above the American average, and above the average of many white and Asian groups, such as those of Dutch or Korean descent.

Obviously those 'shithole' degrees as you classify them, translate into income levels quite possibly higher than yours.

you can find rankings on universities around the world. Not hard for you to prove or disapprove your assumption.

A former friend of mine (he died unexpectedly, R.I.P.) rec'd a Chem. Eng. degree from Egypt. In addition to his mother tongue he was fluent in english, german and french. engineering in Egypt is taught in english and he learned german and French on his own working on projects in France and Germany. His chem. eng. degree from Egypt did quite well for him.

Yes. Nice find, this is awesome!

Like you I have an offspring that considered joining the military and like you I wasn't pleased but I wasn't going to discourage him except - if he joined he was completely on his own from that point on. He didn't join and has done well.

You probably misunderstood me. I know your daughter is no military brat, I thought you woudn't want to hear that since she's in the military.
That is good!
Huh? I have no political agenda here. Dude, chill. I'm agreeing with you here.

I'm not completely disagreeing with you. The children of soldiers are indeed problematic for a variety of reasons. But today's soldiers are more informed and there are more outlets and opportunities for their children to become more well rounded then perhaps ever before.

I apologize if I've mischaracterized your thoughts in any way.

Good for you, good for him .. which is not to suggest that military life isn't an honorable life .. but the sacrifices are incredible. Raising their own children is just one of them.

I want to share this with you .. whenever my daughter is overseas on tour .. especially in combat zones .. I have frequent nightmares. It's about the only time I've ever had nightmares. I've never told my daughter about them, but when she was in Iraq, they came almost daily.
