Russia's main fortifications are on eastern border states of Europe.

Russia is in Syria because of it's ability to work with Iran
( who's Qods forces are in Syria) and Hezbollah along with Assads regime -not by brute force

It's not just miliatry now either - it's commercial contracts, and Russian expertise in their building nuke plants
