Trump mocks Elizabeth Warren as 'Pocahontas' in front of Native American leaders

Since I’ve never associated with low life pricks in my life, it’s difficult to imagine there are so many out there. Forums like this provide a window into how pervasive they are.

Scary, isn't it? OTOH this place gives a freedom of anonymity to ppl who wouldn't dare speak or behave in real life as they do here. And who knows, maybe this type of venue provides a bit of conscious-raising to ppl who think that mocking someone's NA heritage by calling her "Pocahontas" is okay. Something tells me that these same people wouldn't call a white-appearing Hispanic coworker "Jose the Wetback."

Eh, it depends. Most people don't like being called racist. So there are people, on this board and in the real world, who use it as a weapon to shut other people down because they know the power of the charge.
If I don't like you, I'll call you a racist
If I disagree with you, I'll call you a racist etc.
So depending on what one's goal is just calling all people racist doesn't necessarily advance any positive change.

That could very well be true. Still learning my way around this little microcosm of the Innertoobz, and its denizens.

Here is a question for you. I retired almost eight years ago. At the time I was working for a very large health care entity as a utilization review nurse. My next-over-cube person was a RW-radio-listening super "patriot" conservative who absolutely hated Obama. Will call her T. here. Because we shared our work space with a variety of people who were of different races, at least 30% non-white, she tried hard to couch her hate of Obama in political terms. Like me, she is a white person. When a coworker who happened to be a person of color would enter her cube to ask her a question about the work stuff, T. would speak pleasantly, slowly, and kindly as though a child had come in to ask her what color crayon to use next. Even worse, if the person stayed longer than a couple of minutes, T.'s language would shift to mimicking "Ebonics". "Oh girrrrl, you don't need to deal with that hot mess, let me do it" and so on. Would you think this person was racist, even though rather benign?

BTW, during the 2008 campaign someone put up some cartoons in the cafeteria depicting Obama as a witch doctor and as a Muslim. Everyone believed that T. did it. I don't know because she really is a nice person, but I can see why she was a suspect.... especially given her very outspoken political viewpoint.

Almost at it's core is how are we defining racism today? (And I hate using this board as an example because it's such a small number of people, many who have "known" each other for years, along with some real outliers that I don't feel it's representative of the country.)

But I'll offer this as an example. It's been argued here by several people that one's personal behavior doesn't matter, it's how you vote that does. Therefore your personal behavior doesn't make you racist but if you vote a certain way it does.

As to your example it definitely seems like your co-worker could be exhibiting some racist behavior but without knowing them it's hard to say if that specifically makes them a racist. (meaning was this a one time thing or is this repetitive behavior)

We all know racism can manifest itself in many ways. Certain laws, words etc. (or if you believe in implicit bias almost every white person is racist)

I spend too much time on message boards (sports and political) and somehow it seems to bring out the worst in a lot of people. This board is no different. Just look at the trolling, name calling etc.

(Daughter walked in so lost my train of thought here, i'll finish when I get it back) my bad

the republican party is the party that Americans of color hate

that means Im on the side of the multi color national party

this is why we dont let idiots racists define racism

they have no idea what racism is

There's another phrase that the right uses to shut people down and we see it everyday starting with trump: fake news.

That's different than racist and I think you know that.

And yes people calling things they don't like fake news is weak.

But we both know that's not what this is about and you'll notice I didn't say right or left.

Racism and fake news are not the same thing. (Unless you want to argue this country was founded on fake news)

I know they're not the same thing cawacko, the point was that there are phrases that shut down conversation and fake news is a big one.

If there's to be racial reconciliation in this country do you think it starts with calling everyone racist?

Everybody isn't being called racist, you know that. You of all people should understand the nuances, the coded language and the dog whistles. The racism on this forum, for example, isn't always in your face.

It's in the little jokes, the side comments, the fake statistics, the false comparisons.

Most of the racism here is pretty in your face. In the real world there are subtleties, not a whole lot here.

Actually TTQ64 has called all white people racist. You may think she's not including you in it but she has said all white people so even you aren't immune from it.

I'm white. Who am I to tell a black person what to think? I've seen plenty of racism but haven't experienced it. Neither you nor I can truly understand what black people go through every day of their lives. Discrimination is pervasive in the system and I don't see how anybody can deny that.
