You guys are both welcome.
It makes me sick to see an honored elder like GHWB being slimed in this way. For the record, it looks more to me as though he's just putting his arm around someone leaning into him, to steady himself. The someone happens to be a female. He's in a w/c.... where else is his arm going to go?
Yes Bush 41 placed country over party
One thing I like about Poppy, is he was one of the last breed of northeastern Republicans who seemed to generally believe the government was not supposed to be legislating biblical law, he was reasonably educated and did not worship at the altar of ignorance.
And he was modestly respectful of science and the environment (in the way Republicans used to be). One of my favorite things he did was the 1990 amendment to the Clean Air Act, which significantly improved that landmark environmental act. That is something no modern republican, teabagger, or Trumpette would even consider doing.

<sigh> I miss those days of rational (R)s as well. I grew up in a pretty conservative upper middle class 'hood, surrounded by sci guys, most of them with PhDs. There were also a few university professors in the sciences as well. They were virtually all Republicans. We could tell in those days by which newspaper people had tossed into their yard. The morning one was conservative; the evening one was not. None of those guys would have believed the current GOP and its disdain for science, education, keeping your religion to yourself, public displays of immorality, etc.
I'm with you on defending him on the butt-groping issue. But he's far from an honored elder. This is a guy who was appointed to protect the CIA when its dirty laundry was being exposed, who was appointed to defend the Republican Party during Watergate, who was known as a 'will always put party over country' guy, who was behind the Iran-Contra scandal and then pardoned the criminals who had been convicted or were facing trial, who pursued profits in the arms dealing Carlyle Group, on and on.
He's the guy who gave us these sons:
- Neil Bush, a central figure in causing the S&L scandal that resulted in a thousand convictions of bankers - the first banking crisis in the US since FDR had regulated Wall Street until Reagan deregulated them
- George W. Bush - do I really need to explain
- Jeb Bush, the loyal brother who stole the 2000 election for his brother, giving us the disaster of George W. Buh instead of the far, far better presidency of the choice of the American people, Al Gore, and again put party over country/principle/democracy
both parties have moved to the extreme. Dem's rarely talk working class solutions (except tax the rich), instead they focus on Identity Politics- which is inherently divisive..
The Republican party has been split with the outsider Trump against the establishment #neverTrumps.
I go with the populist wing of the Republicans now-but just for now, as the establishments will eventually wear down any populism
Partisan politics is a minfvck though...i see no reason to hitch my wagon to any party.
I go where I think it's best..I voted for Clinton and Obama the first time.
Hilary for a variety of reasons ( not to be confused with her variety of excuses) was a no go -no way.
I was trying to remember a better time when the republican party was a party of real ideas and loved this country.
I would have to go back to the days when King was a republican
That would be Lincoln or Teddy Roosevelt and that's it. Seriously.
He wasn't a Republican. He was neither. His father was a Republican, who switched his vote from Nixon to JFK when JFK called his son in prison.

Ike was a good man
Not that much. He oversaw an utterly disastrous, murderous foreign policy. He gave the country Richard Nixon and put the world on a hair trigger for nuclear war by making that the only available response to incidents in Europe (JFK's top priority was to reduce
that risk Eisenhower had created).
Under Eisenhower the evil Dulles brothers ran American foreign policy. They and Eisenhower are the ones who turned the CIA into a rogue agency, who overthrew democracy in Iran creating the disaster ever since, who overthrew democracy in Guatemala.
They approved the Bay of Pigs operation, they conducted the CIA program researching mind control that subjected thousands of people to LSD, and crippling torture, without their consent. I could go on.
OK, I'll go on. They allied with the murderous dictator of the Dominican Republican - and when a Dominican dissident was going to expose him and became a New York professor, the CIA kidnapped him to be boiled alive by the dictator.
Ike wasn't President in the 60's to give Hippie's LSD
You know who else Ike was?
John Kennedy was against the US's history of always aligning with the most far-right regimes, who would torture and repress, and oppose any neutral regime as 'communist'. Kennedy planned to oppose Europe continuing its colonies and to support independent nations. It's a lot of why he was beloved across the world.
In Africa, the leader who was most advocating for African independence and unity was the first elected leader of the Congo, Patrice Lumumba. Kennedy planned to work with him. Eisenhower and Allen Dulles did not like that policy - and they assassinated Lumumba after Kennedy was elected, days before he was sworn in.
