I was in grade school.
I was Catholic back then, so it hit even harder,
but mostly i recall the sudden end of the dynamic president Kennedy who gave the entire country inspiration ..

It all died that day. we got hacks like LBJ and Nixon instead

Same here. Even as a kid I knew how close we came to Armageddon over the Cuba Missile Crisis. Remember how they called the days of his administration "Camelot"? Turned out to be apt.... after the king had fallen, we fell back into rule by feudal lords. So sad for our country.

Actually, you didn't know how close we came. No American did.

It wasn't until decades later that we learned it was far closer than we'd realized, and I'm not just talking about the Soviet Sub that almost fired a nuke - the Soviet commanders had 100 tactical nukes for any invasion of Cuba by the US we didn't know about.
