I would say that taxes period are a huge barrier. Most people don't understand exactly how much is taken in taxes when you factor in all the labor taxes, environmental taxes ect.
I work as a millwright for a company that makes food cans as my main job. They're classified as a large volume producer of hazardous waste. They're required to pay a company to haul it away to be disposed of. Sounds like a good thing right? Know how the company disposes of it? They run it through a thermal oxidizer that filters out the bad stuff that is produced when it's burnt.
Guess what we have on site to deal with the overspray that comes off the coating machines. Two thermal oxidizers The same exact type that the disposal company uses to dispose of our waste. But because of regulations that are in place they have to pay something like 600 bucks a barrel to transport and burnt instead of being able to burn it on site. Another artificial cost they incur because of government.
