Well, it's not that simple.

Their view is that they 'just wanted to leave the US', making their land not part of the US.

So, they said, no, US, you can't keep having forts in the south, and said that the people in the forts had to return to the north and could not be resupplied.

Lincoln defied them to resupply the fort, and they attacked the fort, which was now in 'their' land. Their intent was not to attack the northern states - so they view the war as caused by the north. And it is different than if they'd attacked northern states.

Leaving America didn't give them the right to seize American land. They would have easily gotten away with their secession if they hadn't then committed an act of war.

Well, leaving America meant the land leaving America, just as when the colonies left the British empire, they took the land. The act of war was whether the south was attacking the US, or the US was maintaining an armed force in the new confederacy.

If southerners believe America is equivalent to England, then perhaps they should just go back. Fort Sumter was American land, and was even signed over to the government by South Carolina in the 1830s. But, who's expecting southerners to honor their contracts?

And why did Lincoln offer command of Union forces to Robert e Lee? Lee said no but many other southern slave owning generals chose to serve with the Union and lincoln accepted them.!!!
