Why weren't all of the JFK documents released

I'll take a stab at it, from what i read, some say security reasons, the US still maintains for covert purposes some of the same contacts now that were present at that time, not individuals, but groups or associations, and it would be a risk to them to have their identification known
I also heard that it would embarrasses some of the powerful figures/families in Mexico who have been in some sort of power since that time
That the CIA doesn't want things they did back then tarnish their reputation today
And lastly, that the President wants to stroke the release so that it deflects from the negative attention he gets on other matters

All could be, but why play with the American people and pretend to do stuff. Americans are the dumbest shits on the planet if they allow their selves to be treated this way and do not ask why.
They don't see it as playing, the first three entities I went thru probably feel they have a legitimate argument, the last, well, figures it is going to come out anyway so why not use it for political ends
I'm not the conspiracy type, but I never thought that anything ever would be released that would end all the speculation
They are violating the law. We treat this too easy, why have laws that are not followed? These docs were to be released, they are treating the people like little kids who get a new toy today, America is dead and doesn't know it

Does the CIA really think that people need an additional reason to think bad thoughts about it?
The "they" is the President, and I think somewhere in there there is a provision that it is up to the discretion of the sitting President

It is very likely the remaining documents have little that will support any conspiracy theories. The reasons for withholding them are likely to protect sources, to hide other countries giving us information, possibly to hide embarrassing things.
A good question I have not seen asked is, were the thousands of documents just released, justified to have been kept confidential this long? I think the answer is clearly 'no' and that deserves criticism as an example of ridiculous over-classification.
This is a case of trump incompetence and CIA manipulation. They've had this date for 25 years - yet the CIA flooded the White House with requests for withholding documents just before the release. That should have already been handled, not need more time.
But the documents are of interest to CIA researchers - it's not every day there is access to documents like these that are an aberration because of the Congressional reaction to the JFK movie and public interest.

It's very simple. trump doesn't even have a staff. His family is supposed to multi task, and get everything done. So, while he was flapping his jowls, and toilet tweeting about a variety of non issues, nobody ever redacted the files in order to prepare them for release.
It's yet another case of an inept POTUS claiming 'the dog ate my homework'.
looks like there is going to be a full release ( per Trump's new tweet) redactions for sources and methods only
I was wondering the same thing the other day -- why not release them all. Husband Unit said what you said here, they don't want to reveal their methods, and sources as well.
