One thing they do, is they fight for a living. Don't we all? The symbol of the country is subject to the competing claims of the population.
So I say both, if the flag represents ALL the claims attributed to it, and not just the jingoistic claims of the fake patriotic people.
So, I can't say why anyone does fight, but I just said what the should aspire to be fighting for if they are looking at OUR =USA flag.
