Trump is losing the conservative base in favor of the nationalists.

Celebrate if you like, but the Republican party is dying, and if you think the country is going to choose a nationalist shit sandwich over what the Democrats are offering, I'd welcome you to bring it on.

Also, Jeff Flake is not running again, and he's one of the most conservative conservatives on the planet. Bannon will run a nationalist to replace him, and he'll get run over quite easily by a Democrat. Keep feeding the Dems seats. Alabama is already up for grabs.

I think they are begining to see the death of trumpism.

maybe the intel briefing about American security is making it obvious trumpy is abput to go down.

they may be betting talking against trump the the current incarnation of the republican party will give them front row seats to reclaim the republican party name after it all goes down.

the trumpy trolls are going to be so imbarrassed to claim trumpism soon.

how many are going to scream they never backed trump or voted for him?

If the Republican Party is dying and has as much power federally and state wide as they currently do what is it the Democrats are actually doing?

What s the democrat party offering?

Higher wages, better healthcare, diversity, increased freedoms, better national security (infinitely better, actually), a better EPA (Scott Pruitt is a Captain Planet villain), a semblance of civility and the ability to work across the isle. The party is largely comprised of centrists, and would work towards tax reform that didn't enrich the already-rich.

The question is, what do the Republicans offer? Their base is shrinking rapidly as they die from old age and obesity and/or gum disease.

I don't think there ever was a "conservative base". Not in the sense of Chamber of Commerce, CATO, Wall Street-style conservatism.

The supply side, corporate free trade, deregulation, anti-minimum wage side of the Republican party never had a significant national constituency. You could fit the number of people who worship at the alter of the Austrian school of economics in a phone booth, rhetorically speaking.

Whatever name you want to give them - moral majority, teabaggers, wingnuts, Trumptards - the conservative base has always been the same for decades.....bible thumpers, white nationalists, neo-confederates, and the like.

The Republican base is a hodgepodge of conflicting conservative ideologies. The actual brains of the base (neocons and neolibs) are out of power, and the nationalist fringe have engaged in a hostile take-over. There's like one or two libertarians left from the Tea Party movement.

What is left now that the true conservatives are jumping ship? I define true conservatism as being the root of the Republican party -- fiscal responsibility.

First, do you disagree with my premise? Why are conservatives dropping off?

I've been on this board waaaay too long and followed politics for too long as well. I've heard declarations from Democrats/liberals that the Republican Party was dead and buried for years and look where we are today.

The Republican Party has a lot of current issues but as the article I posted earlier from the WaPo shows so do the Democrats. So no I don't agree with your premise nor do I believe the party is dead.

I'm sure you've been on the board a while, but not before the internet -- in which since its inception, we have seen the ideological backbone and brains of the base get cannibalized by the Bannon wing. Neoconservatives, neo-liberals (Reagan conservatives), and even libertarians are an endangered species. Maybe for the better, but look at what is left. Nationalism. Very ugly nationalism.

I don't think a political entity that calls itself the "Republican Party" is ever going to be dead in our lifetimes.

But when you think about it, "Republican Party" is just a name. It can be co-opted by anyone who amasses influence and power. The modern Republican Party is nothing remotely like the Republican Party of my youth. Outside sharing the name, it is almost like a completely different party. 40 years ago, the Republican party believed in science, environmental protection, reasonable regulation, reproductive choice, and had many liberals especially from the northeast.

I mean, once the Democratic Party shed itself of the Dixiecrats, it became a different party in a way too.

Flake is a Reagan Republican like I am. Clearly that type of conservative is not welcomed in Trump's world. Doesn't mean I'm going to become a Democrat but yes the party is changing. But party's change and the Republican Party will change again when Trump is gone.

Both party's will continue to change as the country changes. We're probably around the same age (Gen X) and both party's are different today in various ways than in our youth. I mean it's pretty hard to imagine anyone winning a Presidential election 49 states one today yet it happened in the '70's and '80's.

But today's Republican Party is no longer the party of Reagan that is for sure.

Regardless of whether or not my premise is true, Trump is losing people who are already sympathetic to his policies. How is he going to add to his base? And what is going to replace white nationalism; the last pillar of the Republican base?
