you can't go into the army being unfit for combat.
You can't go in and just be a cook without being able to carry a rifle

What difference does that make, Bill?? There was no reason to be in the military at that time unless you were gung ho. I woulda gone to Canada. I have a freind who was drafted as a dentist who was in private practice at the time. He had to sell his business for pennies on the dollar, went to Fort Sill, OK to pull teeth on draftees and became an alcoholic, recovered now. Pretty much altered his life in a negative way.
