The American Flag IS the American people. Flags represent a countries pride, it's sacrifice, it's unity, it's identity, otherwise why would we have flags.

Look, you can understand what the flag means to millions of Americans, or choose not to.

It's no different than you telling me that the confederate flag means racism to you and me saying no it doesn't.

And if you don't understand the American flag, then go ahead and disrespect it, that's your choice. And all that goes along with disrespecting it comes to you also.
In this politically divided time remember that it is a battle you will not win at the ballot box. No way no how.

I always got the impression from my great-Uncle, who was at the Battle of the Bulge, that he was fighting for his friends, his mates who in the foxholes with him. I believe to him, the job was to protect his friends and to defeat Hitler so they could all get back home in one piece. I don't know if they were thinking about flags or constitutions foremost in their minds. I also have a letter from a distant great uncle on my mother's side of the family from the civil war. Written to his wife, circa 1864. He was serving in a Pennsylvania regiment. You would be amazed at how articulate and thoughtful your average Union soldier could be. His writing seems to make it clear he felt their mission was to end slavery in the southern states. Both as a moral, and practical imperative. Gripping stuff, man!

My understanding is that my brother joined the Air Force to earn money for college, earn a second college degree, and further his career options. As a air force desk jockey I think he would laugh at the concept he was a warrior "fighting for our freedoms". I have a cousin who served as a junior officer in the Red Army. I'm pretty sure they had conscription at that time in the Soviet Union, so I got the impression he did it as his legal duty, not for money. My step father was conscripted into world war two, so he obviously had not choice and I don't think fighting the Japanese was high on his list of priorities, so again it was a legal obligation. I know for a fact he would have laughed at the assertion he was "fighting for the flag" or for "our freedoms".

As soldiers we fight / fought for a lot of things, our freedom, our safety, our honor, our resolve,

all of which are represented by the flag and the anthem, so yes you disrespect our flag and our anthem you disrespect us

There have been wars and even just skirmishes, where US soldiers died protecting that flag and keeping from being on the ground.
There are stories told of where when one man would fall, who had the flag, that one coming from behind would take it up and continue forward.

The flag represents the US needs to be respected as such.

Are there modifications to police body cams .. to make them more efficient, audible, and telling under way right now? Body cams themselves are a reflection of where this is going.

Will there be legislation enacted that speaks directly to this issue?

None of this is about what you or your side of this thinks.

It's about demand and the power to do it.

Will there be classes to teach civilians how to act, seeing as how their parents don't seem to be doing it.

Why can't anybody answer my simple question? Today's soldier doesn't fight for anything but corporate profits. It could be argued that today's soldiers make us less safe, not because of their own doing, but because of the heinous foreign policy the U.S has had since the end of WW2. They do the bidding of Exxon/Mobil, more so now that the corporation has invaded the White House.

This is a good discussion, and one I believe to be germane to the OP.

Truth is, WW2 was a war of choice for America. Sure there are good arguments for stopping the plague of nazis .. but we entered the war by choice.

England and Churchill were begging for us to get in, and FDR badly wanted to get in. But most Americans wanted no part in it. FDR was bound by law and the isolationist sentiment in America at the time.

FDR had a plan. He goaded and pushed the Japanese into attacking Pearl Harbor .. an attack that should have surprised no one.

The country no longer had a choice.

I knew one of the Tuskegee airmen, and while I never directly asked what his motivations were, I was amazed at the sense of honor and pride he felt at serving...especially given the way white America treated him. I have rarely ever met such a forgiving and magnanimous soul; someone who had every right to be resentful but chose to rise above it.

Three of the things he told me I still remember to this day. And I probably always will.
One is that he felt he had something to prove. Maybe even a bit of a chip on his shoulder. To show that black men were equally capable of flying military aircraft with a high level of proficiency. I imagine he was not the only Tuskegee Airman that felt like that.

The second was him at an Alabama railroad station, and the MPs making the black pilots ride in the cattle car, whilst giving the passenger cars to German POWs. Wow. Gripping, and disturbing stuff.

The third thing I remember him saying is that when they began flying their P-51s to escort bombers to Germany, initially the white bomber pilots did not want them for escort. But the proficiency and skill of the Tuskegee Airman became legend overtime, such that white bomber pilots began requesting the them for escort. Incredible.

Yes. Add to that the fact that there was segregation in the military that lasted until WW2 was over. Truman polled all military, and they voted 95%-5% to keep the military segregated.

He gave the military the finger, and told them to suck it up.


So yes...there was a fierce sense of pride during WW2, given that it was a platform to prove their worth...something they rarely had at home.
