Claim: Whites are safer in diverse neighborhoods

Interesting claim. He says the more white and more Republican a county is the more white people are in danger. He points to LA and Chicago as two diverse areas that are the safest for white people. What struck me though is Chicago may be the most segregated City in America and LA is not all that far behind. You go to Northern Chicago and it is basically all well to do white suburbs. Same with the West side of LA. I mean if you can afford to live there both areas are great but not all white people are wealthy.

I've been reading more the claim that gentrification is racism. So the author is telling white people to move to more diverse areas. But how is that accomplished if it either entails moving to an almost all white neighborhood near a City or gentrifying a neighborhood?

Op-Ed White people should be more afraid of other whites than they are of people of color

President Trump would have us believe that white Americans are endangered by immigrant drug dealers and gangsters, and the liberal politicians who abet them with so-called sanctuary cities.

At a recent rally in Ohio, Trump used lurid language to claim that gang members “slice and dice” beautiful girls like “animals.” Last week, his administration strengthened its crackdown on sanctuary jurisdictions, announcing a new policy that requires local governments to either cooperate with federal immigration agents or lose funding.

It’s obvious to anyone who’s listening that when Trump talks about this terrifying other he’s really talking about non-white people, not just any old foreigner; and indeed, Trump supporters in surveys conflate their fears of immigrants and dark-skinned people.

These fears, however, are not founded in reality. White people should be more afraid of other whites than they are of people of color.

I examined Centers for Disease Control statistics on murder, gun killings and illegal-drug overdoses among white Americans. My analysis shows that the white Americans who are most at risk of dying from these causes are those who live in predominantly white counties.

Rates of homicides, gun killings and illicit-drug fatalities are highest in counties where nine in 10 residents are white and where President Trump won.

The CDC statistics cover 2011 through 2015, the most recent five years for which data are available, and encompass 2,962 counties and 99% of the U.S. population.
According to the data, rates of homicides, gun killings and illicit-drug fatalities are highest in counties where nine in 10 residents are white and where President Trump won in the 2016 election.

Such counties are not limited to one geographical region. They include Boone County, W.V.; Washington County, Utah; Baxter County, Ark.; and Brown County, Ohio.

Correspondingly, the white Americans who are safest from such deaths are those who live in racially diverse areas such as Los Angeles, New York and Chicago, where two-thirds of residents are nonwhite, where millions of immigrants live, and where voters favored Hillary Clinton in 2016. Nonwhites also are safer in these areas overall, though rates vary by location.

White Americans are nearly eight times more likely to die from illicit-drug overdoses than murder, the CDC statistics show, a proportion that undoubtedly reflects the heroin and opiate epidemic. But according to FBI data for 2015, when whites are murdered anywhere in the country, the murderer is five times more likely to be white than nonwhite. (This ratio counts only murder cases in which information about the offender is known by law enforcement.)

Overall, white Americans who live in predominantly white and Trump-voting counties are 50% more likely to die from murder, gun violence and drug overdoses than whites who live in the most diverse and Democratic-voting counties. The more white and Republican a county is, the greater the risk for white Americans.

Whites are so much safer where there are fewer whites and Republicans, in fact, that it raises the question of what exactly underlies this strong correlation between white safety and voting patterns.

It may appear logical that white Americans are more at risk where they are experiencing the most economic pain and supposed neglect by Democratic politicians. After all, much has been made of the role that economic anxiety played in white support for Trump, especially in predominantly white areas.

But census data do not back up such a correlation. White Americans enjoyed the largest real income and employment gains of any race during President Obama’s administration, particularly in Rust Belt states, where federal economic stimulus was strongest.

Perhaps Trump’s supporters are attracted to his macabre rhetoric and promises of draconian crackdowns precisely because they are most at risk of dying the kind of violent death he describes. But in this case, they are seriously mistaken about what endangers them — namely, themselves and other white Americans.

California can serve as an illustrative example of how safety increases with greater diversity. Five out of six white Americans in California now live in counties where whites are a minority. (Nationwide, this is true of only one in six white Americans.) White residents of California are generally safer from murder, gun killings and illicit-drug overdoses than whites elsewhere. Overall, the state’s crime rate is near a historic low.

California experienced political uproar over demographic change in the 1980s and 1990s, and the state generated the same anti-immigrant, tough-on-crime, racist panic that Trump and some Republican politicians are now fomenting.

California’s been-there-done-that advice to the rest of the country: Skip that stage. Safety comes with diversity.

Got that right. Cities and neighborhoods are not the same thing. Lots of feral blacks and hispanic injuns in chicago but you can choose a nbhd that is all-white and you'll be safe. Stay away from black males and there is very little risk from anyone other than the psycho vehicle drivers.

Reading this article made me think of the article in the OP. Boyle Heights is a largely Hispanic neighborhood near DT LA. A few white artists started to move in and it was not taken to kindly. The author in the OP doesn't choose to address this.

Destroying the Neighborhood to Save It

Anti-gentrification activists in Boyle Heights despise even their natural allies.

If “the revolution devours its own,” as the saying has it, then anti-gentrification activists in Boyle Heights, a heavily Latino district just east of downtown*Los Angeles, have been*feasting.*They have greeted*liberal*artists and hipsters with racial taunts, vandalism, boycotts, and mask-wearing demonstrators. In several cases, they have succeeded in forcing events and establishments to move their*activities*elsewhere.*But their victory is*pyrrhic, hindering the vitalization of a long-struggling neighborhood and its ambitious*new entrepreneurs.

The most recent Boyle Heights skirmish*neatly illustrates the conflict between the*bien*pensant*interlopers and the longer-term residents who resent them.*Chris Kraus, a well-connected and celebrated writer,*had been scheduled to speak at a local arts center and performance space. Kraus*is best known for her cheekily titled cult novel*I Love Dick,*which*was turned into a popular 2016 Amazon series. The show’s creator,*Jill*Soloway,*was also the producer and creator of the gender-bending and Emmy-award winning series*Transparent. **

Kraus’s*latest book,*and*the*subject of her planned talk in Boyle Heights,*is a biography of Kathy Acker, a “scholar, stripper, victim, and media-whore”*who gained a degree of notoriety and fame in the eighties as an avant-garde novelist.*An excerpt of the book had already appeared in*The New Yorker, a publication that has profiled Kraus in the past. Kraus was also lucky to have*ultra-hip*Semiotext(e)*as her publisher. The*company’s website describes it as a “punk rock” publisher “best known for its introduction of French theory to American readers.” Kraus had*previously*co-edited a volume for*Semiotext(e)*titled*Hatred of Capitalism: A*Semiotext(e) Reader.*

As it happened, Boyle Heights locals were unimpressed with the more-radical-than-thou pedigree of Kraus and*Semiotext(e).*Most anti-gentrification groups have developers and their political allies in their sights;*Boyle Heights*activists have it in for the area’s art galleries, which*they believe—not without reason—to be*a harbinger of gentrification.*Kraus’s*event was due to be held at one such gallery and performance space, 356 Mission, whose owners*had done everything short of*committing*business*hara-kiri*to distance*themselves from any neighborhood upscaling. 356 Mission*may*not be a legal nonprofit, but*the website assures us*that*all profits go back into the business; further, “356 Mission does not own the building in which it operates. We rent the building from Vera R. Campbell (Boyle Heights Properties).*The space was vacant from 2009 until 2012 and prior to 2009, it was a piano storage building for decades.” In other words,*it is*just the sort of*establishment*that both*Semiotext(e) customers and Boyle Heights natives*could*welcome*as politically acceptable.

Instead,*the artists and gallery owners suddenly found themselves in the same enemy camp as destroyer billionaires like Starbucks founder Howard Schultz, or even President*Trump. (One protest flyer read: “Donald Trump is a Developer and so is 356 Mission.”) For the anti-gentrification protestors, art galleries are by definition capitalist enterprises,*and thus enemies of “the community.”**

One of the major*local*activist groups calls itself The Boyle Heights Alliance*Against*Artwashing*and Displacement (BHAAD).*“Artwashing”*refers to artists, arts*organizations,*and their corporate sponsors who, unwittingly or not, rebrand and upscale—i.e.,*gentrify—low-income neighborhoods. (The related*term“pinkwashing”*refers to gay newcomers to those neighborhoods,*who cause wine bars and dog groomers to come snooping for real estate.) *BHAAAD was not interested in compromise with their*presumptive*political comrades. “[A]ll*new art galleries [should] immediately leave Boyle Heights,” the group announced on Facebook.“Those buildings should be utilized by our community members the ways we best see fit which may be converting them into emergency housing, shelters, or centers for job training.” Kraus and her sponsors had little choice but to cancel their event.*

In February, the activists*also*forced the closing of*short-lived nonprofit arts space*PSSST, despite its claim to*have been*“by and for a diverse array of underrepresented artists.” PSSST explains that it had to close because*“our staff and artists were routinely trolled online and harassed in-person. This persistent targeting, which was often highly personal in nature, was made all the more intolerable because the artists we engaged are queer, women, and/or people of color.”*But in*late-revolutionary Boyle Heights, these*labels no longer automatically command respect.*BHAAD demanded “the full decolonization of Boyle Heights,” and called local sympathizers “coconuts”—brown on the outside, white on the inside. *

Another gallery was spray*painted “Fuck White Art.” (The LAPD deemed the*graffiti*a possible hate crime, though gallery owners refused to pursue the charge.) Weird Wave Coffee, a*hipster coffee shop whose walls are adorned with work by local artists,*has been targeted by protestors carried signs saying*“White Wave Coffee,”*and “AmeriKKKano*to go.”

For all their*overdone excoriation*of*people who are likely their ideological allies, the Boyle Heights activists*are not totally wrong;*gentrification is bound up with artists in complicated ways.*(See*“Portrait of a Neighborhood as a Hipster Haven.”) The list of working-class neighborhoods that have succumbed first to artists,*and then their patrons, friends, and providers*of kale*is long:*Soho*in Manhattan,*Shoreditch*in London,*Bushwick*in Brooklyn, the SOWA area of Boston,*Wynwood*in Miami.*And though*LA Weekly*reports that the city’s rent-control laws protect 88 percent of the area’s renters, some*longtime*residents, including an enclave of mariachis, have seen their monthly bill go up by 50*percent*or more. **

Still, in their Mao-quoting zeal, the activists are thwarting not just their interloping co-revolutionaries,*but the neighbors whom they say that they want to protect. Before being forced to close, PSSST gallery was showcasing Boyle Heights-born Guadalupe Rosales as its first artist-in-residence. Rosales doesn’t believe that she is producing “alien art,” as one activist described the art scene in Boyle Heights on Facebook. “What I’m doing is part of activism,” she says,*“because*something needed to happen to preserve history.”**
Similarly, Lino Campos, who opened a barber shop called The Cream Shop in 2016*and*has lived in Boyle Heights*for*most of his life,*has been*placed*on the gentrifying enemies list. His trendy styling*attracts*young customers from outside the neighborhood, despite its*$20*cost, in a neighborhood where the going rate is*$8*to*$12. Campos argues that his barbers spend more time on the specialty cuts he offers. “I want to be [the] first Chicano to have a chain of barbershops where we can continue to support other*communities as well,” he told the Boyle Heights Beat. “Hopefully, I will live to say that we’ve already got our*ten*shops.”

Lino Campos can dream of expanding his tonsorial empire, but he will first have to overcome the*neighborhood*revolutionaries who oppose his vision.*

Let's see this stupid fuck walk down the street of the Chicago projects at night.

Whites are moving to black communities and cities in great numbers as they discover the advantages of urban living.

That is fact.

Yes, it's the whole gentrification fight. Been going for a decade or more. What's your take on it?

I have no problem with whites moving into black cities and communities. Nothing wrong with almost mixed anything.

Atlanta is dealing with this issue as we speak .. with Atlanta possibly electing its first white mayor in over 40 years. The fact that Mary Norwood is white is less a problem then her being a closet republican .. and therein lies the crux of many problems.

It's far less the clash of blacks and whites, and far more the clash of blacks and republicans. That does not mix well.

There are a few/some/a good number that consider this reverse white flight back to the cities racism and some have gone as far as to call it white supremacy. The fact that whites (it's not all whites of course but they are the largest group) are "breaking up" historical minority communities.

Same thing has happened in London, many former no-go areas have been gentrified.

Have you been to Compton lately?

Almost all Hispanic .. now.

No question of racism there.

The problem is with white republicans moving back. This is not just about black and white people.

When I was in school South Central was largely black, today it is largely Hispanic.

But in all that I've read on gentrification I've never once heard the complaint be it's white republicans moving into the neighborhood's. Because the young white hipsters moving into the cities aren't republicans.

Do you think it's white republicans moving into places like Oakland and Brooklyn? Look at the article I posted in this thread on Boyle Heights. Do you think those white artists are Republicans?

The gentrification issue is about race and class, not political beliefs

You won't hear it because most reporting doesn't go to that depth.

There are white people .. and then there are other white people who don't like non-white people. No mystery there.

Which one would you think works better in diverse communities?

That is fact.

You left out that when the whites move in their an revitalize the place because blacks have run it down, the blacks go elsewhere and do the same thing they did to the places whites had to build back up.
