How the NFL fleeces taxpayers

Why are you so triggered? I was merely telling you where the title of the thread came from. Have I ever in the last 10 years complained about the business end of the NFL? Not a whole lot...and not in here till recently because I haven't been here that long or seen such turmoil. I posted this thread mainly because somebody posted in another thread that they didn't realize that taxpayers partially fund this business. The video fills in a lot of blanks.

First game I ever actually went to was Super Bowl III in the Orange Bowl......things have changed a lot.
Wow....

You attended SB III? That's pretty cool

Mom, Dad and I thought Namath was so cool for "guaranteeing" that win, LOL! We took our fishing boat down Biscayne Bay, turned up the Miami River, docked and walked the 6 or 7 blocks to the O.B.......great way to beat the traffic. WOW, what a game! I was 16. Who'd have guessed I'd end up getting my first bartending job 3 years later working in Joe's club in NYC at Bachelors III on E. 63rd and Lexington. Those were the days!

Man, that's a hell of a story! Thanks for sharing.

Do you have any recollection of ticket prices for that game? (I mean I know there is inflation and all but relatively speaking where they as equivalently highly priced as today?)

I have no idea. If I were guessing I would think somewhere in the $20 range??? I don't know. My dad got them free from his boss at the boat company he worked for. I think it was still called "World Championship" at that point...maybe it became "Super Bowl" after that. Needless to say the Jets were now my 2nd favorite team after the 'Fins'. Then I really started loving football. Also loved Oakland, Dallas and Pittsburgh.

And, he was great to work for. Very personable and charming. And, very protective of us girls, always making sure we weren't "bothered beyond reason" from male customers, LOL. When he was in town he'd take us all out after closing to different after hours places in the city for music, drinks and breakfast. And, he had us participate in these charity softball games in Central Park against the Bunnies, too. I ran into him again around 1998 at Gulfstream Racetrack in Hallandale. He was there because they named a race for him...The Joe Namath Handicap (naturally the race was for FILLIES!!). So, of course he was going be there to present the winners trophy after that race. I was there because my horse was entered in one of the turf races. It was fun that we could sit and laugh about those times in NYC and at the nightclub.

I was 15 riding my mini-bike around the deserted streets of Baltimore by the 2nd half...lol
Namath picked apart the Colts zone defense..wow! that is quite a story/biography.

LMBO!!!

Namath picked apart the Colts zone defense..

All those name are coming to mind now...Snell, Boozer, Sauer, Maynard, Biggs, Coach Ewbank. Phew! Great team.

wow! that is quite a story/biography.

Well, it was a different era, different concerns, Miami was still wonderful and I don't want to see it again...I'm happy with good memories of how it was. :)

How is the NFL "fleecing" anyone? Are the politicians/lawyers who make these deals stupid and can't read a contract? Are they lying to their constituents about the taxes used to fund these stadiums?

Are the NFL owners twisting arms and threatening anyone with bodily harm if they do not get these stadiums built?

I would like to see the answers to these questions in an honest fashion; because if the answer is "no" to all of them, no one is getting "fleeced".

What we do know is that these stadiums often bring a LOT of tax revenue, good paying jobs and prosperity to the cities that host them. I don't know why it is a problem; the Federal Government does not engage in these efforts; it is at the LOCAL level.

If the taxpayers of these cities don't want the teams, they can always vote against the ballot measures and vote out of office those politicians they think are trying to "fleece" them; can they not?

The voters of Seattle voted against public funding for the new stadium. And then the city said, screw you, we are using taxes to help fund it.

Pretty simple.

So; once again, how does this refute anything I posted? If the City Council thumbs it's nose at the voters, how is the NFL "fleecing" them? Isn't this an issue then with their ELECTED officials? How would the citizens deal with this?

Thank you.
