We knew that Trump was neither liberal or conservative, Republican nor Democrat. We thought he was simply an authoritarian-fascist-minded buffoon. We were wrong. His ideology is to be divisive, for nothing other than to divide. Other politicians preyed upon division to fracture and gain votes ('wedge issues'). Trump does it because he thinks its fun, funny, and because that's his ideology. He gains nothing other than the knowledge that he has caused division within society.

I don't think he does it for fun, he's to manipulative for that, everything is orchestrated, he needed a diversion from his Administration's failures and what better way than to mix race and patriotism to create a controversy for his right wing base to rally around, lot easier getting mad at NFL players than having to explain working with Nancy and Chuck

Actually, The Obama has done exactly that by funding groups against Trump:

Some of the chosen beneficiaries are now actively militating against the Trump administration and its policies...

I can go with that to the extent it fits has chronic narcissism. He is divisive because it serves his need for constant attention and adulation from the group he is not offending. One option would be to achieve attention through continuous feats of greatness and virtue. As that is not possible because he is incapable, he does it on the cheap.
 
I told you long ago, sweetie, that Trumpster wouldn't make it past December. Its all a matter of when the Republicans in Congress grow a pair and act. Fortunately, what Mueller will present should force them to act.

Obama did nothing to divide. His very essence (having black genetics while being president) made him divisive.
