Rightwing AfD make historic breakthrough in German elections

The results, if confirmed, represent an affirmation of Merkel’s emphasis on Germany’s stability and economic prosperity at a time of upheaval elsewhere around the globe. They clear the way for her to extend her 12-year stewardship to 16, which would tie the record for postwar Germany.

Merkel in Front, SPD Collapses, AfD Wins Seats
Angela Merkel appears to have won her fourth term as German chancellor, but her coalition partners for the last four years, the Social Democrats, have likely received their worst result since World War II. The right-wing populist AfD has secured more than 13 percent of the vote.

For those that don't understand the AfD is far right, the FDP is the equivalent of our Libertarian Party, the CDU equivalent of Republican Party and the SPD the equivalent of the Democratic Party.

the Social Democratic Party (SPD) to have achieved its worst result ever with just 20% of the vote, while Alternative for Germany (AfD)—who were previously unrepresented in the Bundestag—have taken 13% of the vote.[1]

so Merkel remainns ( no surprise) but her coalition SDP takes a big loss? who does she form a government with?
SDP and AFD??

OK. it still doesn't answer my coalition question, but hey i'll find it soon enough
The CDU/CSU successfully negotiated with the Social Democrats (SPD) to form a grand coalition for the third time.[2]https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/German_federal_election,_2017

Comparing the CDU to the Republicans is a bit iffy (especially in the current era where the Republicans are fairly radical could better be compared to a far-right party like the Polish PiS

I'd say todays repubs are a loose coalition but even then they're not much of a coalition. Lisa Murkowski calling herself a repub???? McCain is more of a Clintonista neocon.

Parties always seem much more disunited in power, the differences in ideology stay making themselves apparent when the votes have meaning.
