Any democracy at all was revolutionary at the time, but the times, although revolutionary, had not discarded with aristocrats, a gentry class, a merchant class, and those who toiled, with or without pay.

in a more equal manner then a simplistic direct democracy, as the large states would always decide elections

This evil was not least to be dreaded in the election of a magistrate, who was to have so important an agency in the administration of the government as the President of the United States.
