Hillary Clinton says the Electoral College 'needs to be eliminated'

Hillary Clinton made an argument for dissolving the Electoral College in an interview with CNN's Anderson Cooper on Wednesday night.

"I think it needs to be eliminated. I'd like to see us move beyond it, yes," Clinton said.

Clinton made the assertion while discussing her book, "What Happened," which recounts the turbulent 2016 US presidential election. Clinton lost the Electoral College to Donald Trump, who pulled in 306 votes to Clinton's 236 last November.

The Electoral College has 538 members who select the US president based on the popular vote in every state, as opposed to the national popular-vote tally, which is why a candidate who loses the popular vote can still win an election.

Clinton won the popular vote by nearly three million ballots, an achievement her supporters have frequently called up in protests during the first half-year of Trump's presidency. Clinton herself has touted it — most recently when she promoted the news website, Verrit, an outlet that calls itself "Media for the 65.8 million," a tagline that references Clinton's popular vote total.

The former Democratic candidate is not the first to suggest the Electoral College should be abolished. Al Gore, who won the popular vote in 2000, but still lost the election to George W. Bush, continued to support the current system, until Trump won in 2016.

the bitch just won't let it go.

The electoral college is genius in that it keeps the huge states from overwhelming the smaller states.
It's set up just like Congress itself : 2 votes like the representatives in the Senate , and a corresponding number of vote as representatives in the house.
It's what the founders designed - a democratic Republic.

Clinton has now blamed the electoral college for her loss - I think that is reason #47 -although I am losing count

It should be. All movement towards one man one vote is to be welcomed. As usual, Hillary is correct, intellectually and morally.

nope. we are not a pure democracy.
we are bound by the balance of power between the states / feds / "we the people".

The genius of the electoral college is that it factors all this in to elect the president

More and more hrc reminds me of Sarah Palin the publicity whore. She's addicted to the attention and says outrageous things to feed that addiction believing she's still a factor. Eventually Sarah faded away. So will hrc.
I wouldn't be surprised to see her as an MSNBC commentator someday. Maybe even her own show. Hey, that's it- a reality show!

I can assure you that had the roles been reversed and Trump lost the electoral college, you would be DEMANDING, an end to this method of electing a president.
Yes, the electoral college was the reason for her loss, after racking up a 3 million vote plurality.

this whole argument is so stupid in that candidates campaign completely differently in trying to win the EC vs the popular vote. Everyone knows the rules ahead of time. There's a reason they don't spend time in CA for example. It doesn't matter whether you win the state by one vote or five million. If it was a popular vote election candidates would spend a lot more time here.

It has happened twice in the last five elections, if it occurred again in the near future it should be examined with the thought of eliminating it, they did the same with the direct election of Senators

If I'm not mistaken the Founding Fathers only added it to appease the Southern States so they would agree to the Constitution, that and the fact they didn't trust the voting public, and thought of the electorals as a final check

Electoral college gives too much say to underpopulated areas, the State of Wyoming with a population half the size of metropolitan Buffalo gets three electoral votes on its own and they are always going get three even if a couple of people live there

Yes, we certainly wouldn't want majority rule in this country............... Like they have in every other democracy in the world........ There is good reasons why no one emulates the clusterfuck created to thwart the will of the ppl...........

When we get to majority rule we will no longer have a republic.

Bullshit.
The Electoral College was set up at a time when over 90% of the populace was illiterate.

It is now obsolete and an insult to the common man, whose vote is truly meaningless.

You are hardly capable of describing nevermind recognizing genius, idiot.
