Politicians have never been "the left." Look at the Iraq War. The left was opposed to it. Corporate Dem politicians voted for it. Some politicians are "left," but the Dem Party does not represent the left.

Democrats have never really represented "the left." I think many on the right would say that Republicans don't really represent them - they certainly did by electing Trump.
But many Dem politicians are just corporate; they don't really stand for much. Most lefties that I know personally don't have some sort of fierce loyalty to that party; quite a few vote Green or another party, or vote Dem as a lesser of 2 evils thing.
