Fast-forming Hurricane Irma could be Cat 3 storm by Thursday night

Tropical Storm Irma jumped to a strong Cat 2 hurricane Thursday morning as it continued to rapidly gain power.

After intensifying overnight, Irma quickly strengthened through the morning in the east Atlantic and could become a major Cat 3 storm as early as tonight, National Hurricane Center forecasters said. While it remains far from the Florida coast in the east Atlantic, forecasters warned the storm has the potential to continue intensifying into an "extremely dangerous" hurricane with winds of 130 mph as it crosses warm tropical waters and encounters weak wind shear.

In their 11 a.m. advisory, forecasters said sustained winds reached 100 mph as the storm moved west, northwest at 10 mph. It remained in the far east Atlantic, about 1,800 miles east of the Leeward Islands.

Irma was able to quickly power up as it lingered over warmer waters and avoided dry air to the north, forecasters said. It's expected to move over cooler waters Friday and encounter more dry air, which may allow its rapid intensification to level off. But in the next few days, it will be moving again over warmer waters with weak wind shear, allowing it to strengthen.

Irma has started turning to the west, northwest, a direction that should continue for the next day. The high pressure ridge should also should also force the hurricane to turn west by the weekend, and then take a southwest track early next week. In the short range, forecasters expect the track direction to continue but say the long range track is less certain.

Over the next two days, winds could reach 120 mph, making it a Cat 3. At five days, it could become a more fierce Cat 4.

after harvey im confident the trump team can handle it : )

Their MO seems to be to give a blank check to whoever is in charge locally and say do your best you have our support.

Sort if like their MO with the military in iraq / afganistan.

Now we got conservatives supporting "blank checks" on Government funds, wow, come a long way from screaming about budgets, debt, and deficits, guess it depends on who is in the White House, so much for the "principals" they told us made up conservatism

"Blank check?" Now your supporting the Government issuing "blank checks?"

And what the hell is a "nationalist?"

I've been monitoring a real time meteorological active map of the currents. It's only completely accurate for 5 days out. Watching the wind currents so far it only shows Irma coming up close to Florida and then being steered north. The freaky thing here is the distinct possibility of it hitting N.Y.C. on guess what day? 9/11. Will keep you posted.

Projected for Friday, 9/8... It appears there is more force on Irma coming from the north which could cause the eye to fall on N.C. on 9/11 around 2a.m. in my opinion. At this point the barometric pressure is only 925. That means this one is nothing to sneeze at...should be a Cat 5. I'm in FL and not taking any chances, stocked up today and had some dead limbs trimmed.

The OBX, it's a Hurricane magnet.

I've been run out of there twice by two different hurricanes and stayed through two tropical storms. I did drive right by Jim Cantore on the way out, last time. He was standing along side the road in Rodanthe.

He looks shorter in person lol.

Landfall is projected for 9/8 or 9/11?

I'm in Florida too, N. Florida. So you think it will miss us?
