judge wounded in courthouse shooting, suspect killed

"Basically what you have is the judge is going to work, these subjects were waiting for them. He comes up, shoots at the judge. The judge returns fire," Steubenville City Manager James Mavromatis told Fox News.

The suspect was shot and killed when a probation officer at the scene returned fire. A second suspect, who was in a car with the accused shooter, was taken into custody shortly after the incident.

Anybody heard of a motive?

The sheriff said there was “clear indication” that shooter "laid in wait" for the judge to ambush him. "Thank God he's not a good shot,” he said Monday morning. Neither the suspect nor the passenger in his vehicle have been identified, but the suspect had a criminal record and was a resident of Steubenville, officials said. Sheriff Abdalla said had the probation officer not been there, “this gentleman would have kept on shooting until he killed the judge.”

"This guy's known to law enforcement very well,” the sheriff said. “We're trying to go back and search the records and see if there were some court cases he may have been involved with. He may have been upset, didn’t get a fair shake." He said there were no known threats to the judge previously.

looks like daddy wanted 2 kill bcuz his rapist son wuz convicted of raping a young girl

the man who shot and wounded an Ohio county judge outside a courthouse Monday morning before being shot dead by police was the father of a Steubenville High School football player who was convicted of rape in 2013, authorities said Monday.

Jefferson County Judge Joseph Bruzzese Jr., 65, was "ambushed" while walking toward the county courthouse in Steubenville Monday morning, court officials said.

The gunman was identified as Nathaniel "Nate" Richmond, the father of Ma'Lik Richmond, a Steubenville High School football player who served nearly 10 months of a year-long sentence in juvenile detention after being convicted, along with another high school football player, of raping a 16-year-old girl in 2012.

The case brought international attention to the Ohio city and led to allegations of a cover-up to protect the football team.
