A drunken American tourist was beaten up after giving a Nazi salute in Dresden, local police say.

The 41-year-old man, who was lightly injured in the attack, was being investigated for using symbols from banned organisations after giving the salute.

Public displays of Nazi symbols like the swastika or gestures like the "Heil Hitler" salute have been banned in Germany since the end of World War II.

A conviction usually results in a fine but can carry a prison sentence of up to three years.

The incident happened on Saturday morning as the inebriated tourist left a bar in the eastern city’s Neustadt area and repeatedly gave the Hitler salute on the street.

“An unknown passerby then beat up the man and slightly injured him,” a police statement said.

The district in which this took place is known to be a liberal part of town and is a popular meeting place for students.

Police said the man who beat him up fled the scene, and that the American tourist was “severely drunk".

They are still seeking the passer-by for causing personal injury.

A week ago, two Chinese tourists were arrested for giving Nazi salutes outside the Reichstag.

They were fined almost £500 each but were allowed to leave the country with their tour group.

I went around the classroom, asking pupils which city they were from. When I got to a slightly darker-skinned boy, his classmates thought it was hilarious to shout ‘Africa!’ It’s a theme.
A girl with a similar complexion was taunted with monkey sounds; her peers refused to sit next to her, saying she smelt bad. I apparently erred when, teaching the word for wife, I showed my students a picture of Michelle Obama. The image of the then First Lady was greeted with exaggerated sounds of repulsion: ‘So ugly!’ they said. ‘So black!’

Such comments would have been treated harshly in a British classroom a quarter-century ago, let alone today. But my own protestations were met with confused faces — crestfallen that they’d disappointed their teacher, but clueless as to the nature of their mistake. And this stretches far beyond the classroom. To many Chinese, ideas about racial hierarchies are not outdated anathema but unquestioned belief.

The Chinese don’t make a big deal about their racism: it’s so commonplace it can seem almost cheerful. An advert for a detergent shows a black man chatting up a Chinese woman, only for her to shove him in the washing machine until he emerges a fair-skinned Asian.

It's showing the Chinese society doesn't value equality like we do (and don't yell at me -I'm simply c/p from a google 1st reply source).

You got the Uyghurs- Moslems but also very much more about ethnic separatists
You got rampant undisguised anti-Japanese racism ( a product of WWII -but much more deeper and historical)
you got anti-western slurs like "western devil"
you got "barbarians" which came from the Chinese disgust at the Mongols nomadic life
Tibet - complex but hated by the Han

I'm sure a lot of it comes from the Chinese viewing themselves as "Middle Kingdom"
