Duke University authorized the removal of a Gen.*Robert E. Lee*statue from the front of its chapel Saturday after students made very clear they don’t want the Confederate monument there anymore.

Vincent Price, president of Duke University, said on the university website that he made the decision with “strong support of the Board of Trustees” after the monument was defaced on Wednesday.

“I took this course of action to protect Duke Chapel, to ensure the vital safety of students and community members who worship there, and above all to express the deep and abiding values of our university,” Price said in the post Saturday.

The Durham, North Carolina, university looks set to follow other institutions and relocate its monument. The memorial will be “preserved” in some capacity, Price said, “so that students can study Duke’s complex past and take part in a more inclusive future.”

The question is why did Duke have this monument anyway? The college near me has a monument to MLK. That said I am in the North, we wouldn't put up with southern racist up here, never did

I've always thought the modern southern fetish for statues of prominent confederates was more about "sticking it to the darkies" in an oblique way, than it was about a genuine appreciation of history.

But, if the south was genuinely interested in commemorating southern history, then why aren't there prominent and widespread statues and museums dedicated to memorializing the millions of victims of slavery, to remind us of the pure evil of the southern institution of slavery??

I mean even the Germans accept memorials to holocaust victims on their soil.

The enslavement, torture, rape, and murders of millions of blacks in the southern United States over the course of several centuries is just as dark a stain on human history as was the Nazi Holocaust. You and others need to come to terms with that. Self introspection is a strength, not a weakness.

Slavery and the Hollocaust are both stains on our societies but because we did not commit the crimes of the Hollocaust, slavery is our stain. 2,000,000, possibly more people died being transported to the USA, I have not seen the number of those that died once they arrived, but once here they were treated like livestock, bred, maintained and sold for value as labor.

Although the Hollocaust and Slavery were different in their nature, they are both atrocities and in no way be excused or trivialized by trying to say one is worst than the other.

Of course a total lunatic like you would be completely unaware that up to a million freed slaves died from hunger and disease in the aftermath of the Civil War. The Union soldiers couldn't give a shit about them and left them to die from starvation, cholera and smallpox. So around 1.5 million died from the Civil War whilst over 60 million died in WW2 including at least six million Jews, some say anything up to eleven million, eight million Poles and over twenty million Russians.

After combing through obscure records, newspapers and journals Downs believes that about a quarter of the four million freed slaves either died or suffered from illness between 1862 and 1870. He writes in the book that it can be considered "the largest biological crisis of the 19th century" and yet it is one that has been little investigated by contemporary historians.

Downs believes much of that is because at the time of the civil war, which raged between 1861 and 1865 and pitted the unionist north against the confederate south, many people did not want to investigate the tragedy befalling the freed slaves. Many northerners were little more sympathetic than their southern opponents when it came to the health of the freed slaves and anti-slavery abolitionists feared the disaster would prove their critics right.

You should know that already but I am hardly surprised that PC obsessed Americans are not very well informed. Lincoln was responsible for the death of nearly 1.5 million people, you should be tearing down his statues.

By the way, I am not Welsh you daft old bat! Iolo is the one that likes our woolly brethren. I am partial to a nice bit of lamb though preferably with mint sauce and new potatoes.
