Sen. Flake politically castrates Trump, possibly setting up a presidential run

Flake is politically astute enough to see which way the winds are blowing, and is planting a flag on what will INEVITABLY be the party's turn in 2020, and even 2018.

Politically astute? More like politically inept if he actually believes championing this global economy would be good for the Republican party. Sure - it's great for corporate interest getting fat off cheap labor.... but for the rest of America who have seen their paychecks go to shit and their jobs go to China and Mexico not so much.

So I hope for their sake conservatives do not take this senator's advice...

Automation is the big job killer, it's one of the things I learned on this forum, how do stop that?

Technology has been replacing jobs for over a thousand years. That is nothing new (nor can it be stopped) and is an entirely different situation than from the one I am describing.

I am talking about corporations that move offshore to replace American labor with cheaper foreign labor abroad.

It still isn't the biggest job killer, sorry

Millions of Americans have lost their jobs due to manufacturers moving offshore for cheaper labor.

Whether you believe it is the biggest job killer or not does not change this, sorry. It's still a very real issue that Americans care about.

It is why we should focus on training people with job skills for the future instead of mourning the past.

Job training is fine - but that's beside my point.

I am talking about jobs that we currently have now - they are just being moved offshore so they can be done more cheaply in countries that do not have labor rights and protections.

No one is mourning the past or whatever. I am talking about the present day and present day jobs....

What's the solution. Covfefe? Tax cuts for the rich?

Not sure if you are aware but Republicans were the vanguards, the seminal exponents of free trade. The Democrats eventually sold out to the idea.

Republicans are the free trade party.

Republicans are the free trade party.

NAFTA and the China Trade Agreement was passed by both Republicans and Democrats (and signed into law by a Democratic President) so both parties are to blame for selling out the American worker to corporate interests.

I would describe Trump more as a populist who has simply took over the reigns of the Republican party and changed their message. In many ways he ran as much against the special interests inside the Republican party as must as he did in the democratic party.

Time will tell if it has a lasting effect. I hope it does - for the party's sake because now that the average American has seen what the effects of unfettered free trade has that is no longer a winning message. Lincoln (the first Republican president) was very much a protector of American business. So the party has not always been about free trade.

I think the focus on jobs is misguided, I don't like to see jobs go overseas, but the biggest job losses arent due to offshoring and unfortunately, that is where the focus lies when it should be
modernizing and equipping people for the jobs of the future. There are American jobs here that aren't filled because people aren't qualified. Our advanced vocational training isn't what it could be.
We need to focus on what matters

Well we disagree - because I believe the millions of Americans who have lost their jobs because of cheap labor overseas does matter - and trade reforms need to be instituted to protect American workers from this. The fact that advancing technology often replaces jobs only makes it that much important that we protect the jobs we can.

So I would argue that if anything is misguided - it would be to continue to allow competing countries that treat their workers like shit to entice our businesses to their shores without consequence. Race to the bottom economics is not something I'm overly fond of.

I'm all for job training - and so is the President who has expanded that program.
