Russian President Vladimir Putin confirmed Sunday the staff at US diplomatic missions

Russian President Vladimir Putin confirmed Sunday the staff at US diplomatic missions in Russia will be cut in response to a sanctions bill the US Congress passed last week.

Russian state media quoted Putin saying 755 out of "a thousand or so" employees will "have to stop their activities in the Russian Federation." That includes diplomats and technical workers, he said.

The United States has not identified how many diplomatic employees are in Russia. Russia's state television, First Channel, reported Saturday that 745 of 1,200 people employed at the US embassy and consulates would be affected.

This will be the start of another cold war that hopefully will not turn hot. Either way it is ensuring much, much more military spending.

We have a few hundred years of geopolitical history that teaches us that political and military power are ultimately dependent on economic power, and since Putin doesn't have much of the latter .. due to his own incompetence .. he will have less and less of the former with every year that passes.

In the 17 years that Putin has been in power, he's made virtually no progress on the economy. It remains overly dependent on energy, a declining industry with massive oversupply that remains under constant threat. Energy is about the only thing that keeps it afloat. There is virtually no industrial development.

Ever bought a Russian TV, smart phone, a car .. anything?

As long as Russia remains dependent on energy, they will remain the mouse that roared.

And Trump screwed Putin with his energy policy.

Go figure.

Do you think Putin and Trump got together and decided to make the US energy dominant?

Do you REALLY think that?

I don't think Putin and Trump decide on much of anything together. Putin is far smarter than Trump and he knows it.

I think Putin plays Trump for a fool.

What will become of Russia's booming smart phone industry?

Oh wait, there is no booming smart phone industry or computer industry or auto industry or anything else. Nor is there likely to be anytime in the near future.

Should we blame 'russiaphobes' for that, or Putin?

McCain: "Russia is a glorified gas station"..yet they have the number 2 military in the world.
will that change? no

How long have we been hearing about spending Putin into irrelevance?
The Russian economy has been hit by sanctions, but energy prices are already recovering .

Further he has China as an economic partner, which cannot replace the EU but it's a lifeline
until Russia does diversify.
Long term Putin's plan is hard power now -damn the costs -to ensure being long term world power with a better economy..

The Russiaphobes would have you believe Putin is on the ropes so they can get their militaristic kicks- he's not.
Nordstream 2 will be sending European capital to Russia in return for LNG. That's YUGE

Russian economy seen growing from 2017 onwards: World Bank

Russia's oil-dependent economy is expected to grow from 2017 onwards, supported by higher global crude prices and oil production rising to new post-Soviet highs, the World Bank said on Tuesday.

You love Putin, don't deny it.

Putin of course.

But Trump's energy policy is a lousy pay back for Putin helping in the election. If Russia is a gas station masquerading as a country, wouldn't Putin have been better off with Hillary as POTUS?

Wasn't Hillary the one who was going to extend the Obama era energy stifling regulations?

Makes no sense.

money that could be used to pay for our entitlement crunch/Medicade expansion etc,.

The Russiaphobes prefer Cold War 2 over improving our financial well being/lives

They certainly as of late cannot seem to see what consequences actions have. It will not bode well for either side.
