Should Trump repeal the Magnitsky Act?

The Magnitsky Act, formally known as the Russia and Moldova Jackson-Vanik Repeal and Sergei Magnitsky Rule of Law Accountability Act of 2012, is a bipartisan bill passed by the U.S. Congress and signed by President Obama in November–December 2012, intending to punish Russian officials responsible for the death of Russian lawyer Sergei Magnitsky in a Moscow prison in 2009.

In June 2012, the United States House Committee on Foreign Affairs reported to the House a bill called the Sergei Magnitsky Rule of Law Accountability Act of 2012 (H.R. 4405).[3] The main intention of the law was to punish Russian officials who were thought to be responsible for the death of Sergei Magnitsky by prohibiting their entrance to the United States and their use of its banking system.[4] The legislation was taken up by a Senate panel the next week, sponsored by Senator Ben Cardin, and cited in a broader review of the mounting tensions in the international relationship.[5][6]

In November 2012, provisions of the Magnitsky bill were attached to a House bill (H.R. 6156) normalizing trade with Russia (i.e. repealing the Jackson–Vanik amendment) and Moldova.[7] On December 6, 2012, the U.S. Senate passed the House version of the law.[4] The law was signed by President Barack Obama on December 14, 2012.

This is one of the sanctions that the Russian lobbyists were trying to overturn in exchange for helping Trump win the election.

Just when you thought the Trump-Russia scandal couldn't get any deeper, some politicians are pointing at another layer of possibly shady connections. House Democrats are wondering why the Department of Justice settled a money laundering case in May involving a Russian real estate company that may have ties to President Trump — and they sent a formal letter to Attorney General Jeff Sessions on Wednesday looking for answers.
The whole situation reads like a complicated political soap opera. On Tuesday, Donald Trump Jr. confirmed that he met with Russian lawyer Natalia Veselnitskaya during the presidential election to gather some dirt on Hillary Clinton. While the meeting, according to Trump associates, was a "nothing burger," this disclosure provided a confirmed link between the Trump family and Veselnitskaya.

That inept dipshit can't even control his kid or son-in-law, much less get anything of substance accomplished.

That has what to do with this? "You may as well ask , "Should Trump repeal Roe vs Wade?". It's not up to Trump."

lets take a look at things objectively. What are Russia's exports? Oil and natural gas which account for like half of all their exports and military things account for some of the rest.

Were not going to buy military tech in bulk from russia as we already produce our own. We are actively trying to compete with Russia in the field of oil and natural gas so we wont buy that either.

By normalizing trade relations we gain access to a new market for exports with very little competing imports.

but muh russia so we wont do it.

Since he won he should right? He owes it to them. I don't much give a shit about it but if it causes you to hemorrhage I am all for it.

You're ignoring the fact that Russia has lost the access to our banks, which is a big part of why Putin and his Oligarchs hate the sanctions.

obviously not......she didn't deliver the promised dirt on the DNC.......her quid was not quoed.......

There's that, and Trump isn't going to wake up one morning and repeal the Act without getting something in return.

But let's assume Trump had a quid pro quo with Vladie Boy just for giggles. Putin would have to be a special kind of stupid to think Trump would feel compelled to honor it---just because Trump made a pinkie promise or whatever lol.

There's a saying 'don't play a player or you'll get played' and I'm sure Vladie is aware of it. *If* Putin meddled to elect Trump, any meaningful quid pro quo is unlikely.

Now presidents repeal legislation? Really? :palm:

Well, he can ask congress to lol.

My point is there's no way Donald J. Trump [who takes great pride in his deals] would unilaterally revoke the act without getting something in return.

Which shoots the quid pro quo theory out of the water.

If 'Trump' revoked the Act *in exchange* for more help in Syria---I'll be cheering from the sidelines.
