President Trump was correct when he said he wasn’t personally under investigation in the FBI’s Russia election meddling probe, two key senators said Thursday, though both of them said the government owes the public a better explanation of what’s going on.

Mr. Trump in his letter firing Director James B. Comey this week made a point of saying the top lawman had assured him three separate times that he wasn’t under investigation — countering some of the more overheated speculation about the sprawling investigation.

Mr. Trump’s veracity in make that assertion has been questioned, but two top senators — Judiciary Committee Chairman Charles E. Grassley and ranking Democrat Dianne Feinstein — briefed last week by Mr. Comey on the broad scope of his investigation said he gave them no indication the president is a target.

“Sen. Feinstein and I heard nothing that contradicted the president’s statement,” Mr. Grassley said.

Mrs. Feinstein agreed with that.

Neither senator would reveal who the targets of the FBI investigation are, but Mr. Grassley said the bureau should come forward and make clear how far its probe goes.

I could be wrong, but I think this was all a way to accelerate to the conclusion we all know and that is Trump did not collide with "the Russians"
 
The MSM has Trump under a huge investigation though. It will go on as long as Trump is in office, or until they get their own horse back in the race. The MSM has an advantage over the FBI though, since they can assert whatever verdicts they need to in order to support their political agenda, and they have a better platform to do it with.

It was not clear who brought up the subject during the dinner the two shared.

Acting FBI Director Andrew McCabe told Congress on Thursday that such disclosures are not standard practice.

Maine Republican Sen. Susan Collins, who serves on the Senate intelligence committee, asked McCabe if the FBI typically tells people that they are not a target of investigation.

McCabe said he couldn’t comment on what Comey might or might not have told the president, but that it’s not standard practice to inform someone that they are not a target.

McCabe also contradicted the White House claim that Comey had lost the support of rank-and-file members of the bureau.

The White House used that assertion to justify Comey’s firing. But McCabe says the claim is not accurate. He says Comey “enjoyed broad support” within the agency and that he holds Comey in the “absolute highest regard.”

He says it was the “greatest privilege” of his career to serve under him.

McCabe on Thursday also assured senators he will alert them to any effort to interfere with the investigation into Russia’s election meddling and possible ties with Trump’s campaign.

Trump’s firing of Comey on Tuesday has led Democrats and others to raise concerns about the future of the investigation.

But McCabe, speaking publicly for the first time since his former boss’ ouster, said there has been “no effort to impede our investigation.”

But him not being under investigation removes any possible ulterior motive for firing Comey.
He didn't fire Comey to protect himself in any manner-because he's not a target of the investigation

On Friday morning, President Trump confirmed he is under investigation for obstruction of justice, while seemingly taking a shot at his deputy attorney general.

Trump’s acknowledgement that he’s personally under investigation comes after the Washington Post, citing anonymous sources, broke that news on Wednesday night.
