There's more to be added. Comey isn't finished yet. He succeeded, via leaking, in effecting a political change. He not only got a Superfluous Prosecutor appointed but it's 'coincidentally' his good buddy Mueller.

They must think we're idiots.

You said it yourself -"audacious". They get away with it, because most people have an innate admiration of the INTEL agencies,and cannot (will not) think thru how the leadership has become politicized.

It's paranoia. I really just laugh when righties say "deep state" now. There is no kind of coordination, or shadow entity. There may be partisanship in some circles, but that's it.

It's silly stuff. Someone started saying "deep state" at around the same time as "fake news," and they've both just become these pathetic go-to's when no real argument can be made.

"a few individuals?" how many are in IC leadership? not that many (doing the unmasking).
But there a lot of low level reports now that can be leaked.

Also who is leaking the Meuller investigation details - these things just do not ooze out by themselves.

I have thought it through. If there was some sort of coordinated "Deep State," THAT would leak eventually. It's human nature. It's why there was no JFK conspiracy, or inside job on 9/11. The sheer # of people that it would take to coordinate any of these efforts guarantees eventual revelation.

The deep state is just a fun little crutch you guys can use when you don't have a leg to stand on.

Silly me but I was taught as a kid in a democracy there are differing opinions and beliefs but the country is one. You believe anyone who doesn't agree with what you do hates this country and is evil. That doesn't sound like a democracy, that sounds like an autocratic dictatorship.

i completely agree with you on grand conspiracies..they always fall apart because of the vast numbers of secrets needed to hold them together.

But this isn't a wacko conspiracy -it's the politicization of the IC leadership.
Look back thru this thread where the IC massaged intel for Obama's consumption per Obama's request.
That's content.

Then you have the press willing and able to leak what content they wish, and a lot more content is available due to the Obama "preservations" The preservations become "reports,and the reports can become "assessments"
Then you have a YUGE amount of leaks -sometimes day after day..somebody has to be doing the leaks -right?

They got a nice little game going, and the leakers are never prosecuted, so they continue

Unlike the Russian conspiracy there's actually evidence for the Deep State.

Reality Winner plays for the Deep State. Again, it doesn't need to be organized and doubtless isn't at the lower levels of operation where they snagged Winner. And she is just the tip of the iceberg.

For craps sake, Mueller loaded his team with Clinton donors for crying out loud. And oh wow, what do you know? Mueller's Team leaked that Trump is, finally, a subject of investigation.

Regardless of how you refer to it, the Deep State is there for anyone who is willing to see it.

I found it interesting in that he went right to NATO expansion as similar to Russia's bewaring invasion from the west
( Napoleon /Hitler)..

He mentioned our ABM systems in Romania and Poland supposedly targeting Iran ..lol ( which has no ICBM's)
