You have to understand how rocked the permanent class in DC was rocked by the win of Donald J Trump. They don't really care about Trump or policy. If they were, they would be proposing things and looking for ways to compromise with him. My sense is that politically he is more aligned with liberals than he is with true conservatives.
The issue is that he is a true outsider. He didn't come up through politics the way the rest of them did. He didn't "pay his dues". He didn't kiss the right rings. He really is beholden to nobody. They can't allow that to happen. The party elites (both democrat and republican) have always wanted to give the veneer that ANYONE could be President, but that isn't really true. The parties have chosen the nominees and the people are left with the two choices the parties nominate. Despite the crossings of true partisans, there really isn't a hairs bit of difference between the two parties.
Donald Trump upended that narrative. The establishment can never let an outsider breach the walls again. They are flummoxed
