Trump unveils plan to privatize US air traffic control system

President Trump announced his plan Monday to privatize America's air traffic control system and separate it from the FAA -- arguing the federal agency is too “antiquated” to innovate and casting the overhaul as an initial step toward improving the country’s infrastructure.

Trump wants to turn the air traffic control system into a modernized non-profit organization that operates on fees paid by airlines and others that use U.S. airspace, instead of taxes.

Is this a good thing? Why not update the system in place?

I have to mull this one over a bit. Normally I would agree that with some government agencies privatization is better. This one is a bit more complicated than even the article references. 9/11 comes to mind for me. When the FAA said land everything now, it happened.

Always suspicious when one wants to privatize an existing Gov't entity, especially when life and death are a consideration

Good. Privatize it

But let me speak for all leftwads

"PEOPLE WILL DIE!!!!!! THOUSANDS OF PLANES WILL FALL FROM THE SKY!!!!!!!!"

How is that likely to make a difference? Will there be a choice of ATC companies at an airport? Maybe you would consider privatising the military as well, so you can choose the cheapest option,!

Our corporate overlords are always looking to make a profit on the public commons. Its risk free for them, and amounts to nothing more than crony capitalism.

I am not surprised Drumpf supports and advocates for crony capitalism.

Remember "privatized" air port security before 9-11? Those minimum wage, rent a cops who generally looked half asleep on the job? I remember it.

The public commons and core functions of the federal government - like interstate commerce - should not be subject to the profit motive, where "cost cutting" often is the prevailing tenet and mindest of the corporate profiteer.

NASA is using private rockets ,and they are doing a really good job of even satellite launches.

I see no reason in itself to keep the air controllers part of gov't if a private company can do it better/less costly

if i understand correctly instead of taxes that get charged automatically these turn into fees which companies have the option of swallowing for lower prices or passing onto the consumer.

The left will say that companies always pass on fees to the consumer.

In this industry we already see the rise of budget airlines which do everything they can to entice customers to buy for the lowest price. We also see that there are apps which predict when to buy the ticket at the lowest price. There is a good chance that the airlines may swallow some of these fees to get a price advantage. The only time they really wont consider it is if they are a monopoly like the various telcos in some regions.

I point to other industries. In the banking sector you have foreign transaction fees. Companies like capital one swallow that fee so the customer pays 0 while someone like bank of america charges it to the customer. There are many other examples of corporations absorbing the fees for the customer for a competitive advantage.

Except that it would a non profit that is in charge, not some publicly traded corporation.

The military is a basic function of the federal gubmint

You losers aren't really creative. You just think gubmint can and should do everything for you

PLANES WILL LITERALLY FALL OUT OF THE SKY IF THE GUBMINT DOESNT DO IT. MILLIONS WILL DIE. IT IS A RUSSIAN PLOT

Trump isn't really talking about privatization here. He wants to shift the funding burden from the taxpayer to the users...in this case the airports and airlines. It's just an accounting trick to get this off of the federal books.
