Waters says Trump should 'just cooperate' on Russia investigation.
Rep. Maxine Waters (D-Calif.) hit back at President Trump’s continued dismissal of the investigations into ties between his campaign and Russia, saying the president should just “cooperate.
“If he has no connection, [is] not involved in collusion, he ought to cooperate with the investigation,” Waters said in an interview this week on MSNBC's "AM Joy." “He ought not to simply keep saying, ‘why are you doing this?’”
Waters, a frequent Trump critic, said she and others in Congress have seen enough to lead them to believe “something is going on” and again called for Trump’s impeachment if the investigation finds evidence of collusion between his campaign and Russia.
If there has been collusion, undermining our democracy, undermining our election system, I maintain that he ought to be impeached,” Waters said. “If it’s not, then let’s clear it up, let’s get to the bottom of it all.”
Waters also slammed congressional Republicans for their continued support of Trump, saying they would eventually “pay a price” for not standing up to the president.
“They claim to be patriotic,” Waters said. “Well, I tell you, patriotism means that you’re going to defend this democracy.”
“I believe that the Republicans ... better know that people are watching,” Waters added, “because in the final analysis, they are not going to be able to say to their constituents why they allowed it to continue to go this far without aligning themselves with our democracy.”
