Home Ownership the Driver of Inequality?

Sure, both Republicans and democrats use the tax code to encourage the type of behavior they feel should be rewarded.

For the sake of discussion why does the gov't need to reward homeowners?

The Founding Fathers thought home ownership was sooo important that only property owners should be allowed to vote. Home owners are "invested" in the community in which they live, and therefore are more motivated to help the community be safe and prosperous. As opposed to renters, vagabonds and assorted passersthru.

It's a liberal old school city that is constantly reinventing itself. I've watched it change over the last 27 years. Neighborhoods that where once ghetto turn hipster and change again. There is ALWAYS new construction there and it's always getting higher priced.
My family's moving back there soon buying property and it's changed immensely. New construction is the lifeblood of this Trump termed 'sanctuary city'. Ironically a rental my wife & I checked out was done by some guy that was from central America, you know 'illegal'... best damn new construction I've seen. The place is built on immigrants it's the DNA of Chicago. Every race, every nationality has had it's imprint on the city and it continues to this day with new people yet it always progresses and gets better. An amazing place that is the EXACT opposite of liberal suppression as you want to imagine.

Sorry I have lived and breathed and continue to experience this area, it's absolutely amazing. One of the best cities in the nation if not the world.

I appreciate that we have multiple Bernie Sanders voters on this board but something like this doesn't bother y'all.

TTQ64, bless your heart my friend, but this is why socialism won't take over the U.S. Even white Bernie voters don't want to give up their privilege.

LOL When you want to call me out on stuff like this please include the entire story not just shit that started happening within the last 10-20 years. That is being disingenuous because it doesn't tell the story of how we got where we are.

My response to your post is simple. Housing segregation is the practice of denying African American or other minority groups equal access to housing through the process of misinformation, denial of realty and financing services, and racial steering. Housing policy in the United States has influenced housing segregation trends throughout history. Key legislation include the National Housing Act of 1934, the GI Bill, and the Fair Housing Act. Factors such as socioeconomic status, spatial assimilation, and immigration contribute to perpetuating housing segregation. The effects of housing segregation include relocation, unequal living standards, and poverty. However, there have been initiatives to combat housing segregation, such as the Section 8 housing program.

You can keep trying to blame zoning laws in CA for inequality all you want, but the bottom line, it is racist white men who have been in charge of this country and have made it what it is today.

Blacks have no part in the housing crises of today because white men didn't even want them to own homes.

It took liberal politicians to fight for equality for minorities something the right has never done.

You're article is full of shit.

A simple solution is to cap the deduction at the average interest rate and to the amount of deduction for a median priced home. Then the rich man gets the same deduction as the middle income owner. The poor are out of this equation.

?????.....its already capped.......always has been......besides, rich people don't have mortgages......

I do appreciate liberals calling The NY Times full of shit and standing up for the mortgage deduction. As a home owner I benefit from it and it's something about home ownership that is in our countries DNA that even people who claim to be against inequality support it.

Mortgages didn't exist in the founding fsthers day. Those who owned land and property paid all cash. It was like this all the way through the start of the 20th century.

Ok, I was implying it but should have been more specific. I was referring to the coastal cities. You're SF's, LA's. Portland etc. places where we see the highest cost of living and most exclusive zoning.

I've spent a fair amount of time in Chicago. Many good things about the city but it's also one of the most racially divided.

why would you buy something built by an unlicensed contractor....

????.....ridiculous......banking and loans are even mentioned in the Old Testament......

Who was giving home loans in America in the 1800's? And there was certainly not an interest deduction

banks....haven't you ever seen a western movie where the dastardly banker forecloses on the poor rancher because he wants his land?.........and there was no interest deduction.....probably because there were no income taxes......

TTQ64, like Desh me thinks you didn't even begin to look at the article. It's about the mortgage interest deduction, which you didn't address, and from a liberal perspective of rich vs poor not liberal bs conservative.

To your comments zoning laws today are the politically correct extension of redlining laws.
