Kushner family in Beijing: 'Invest $500,000 and immigrate' to US

The Kushner family hopes to lure investments from wealthy business owners in China with the promise of American visas.

Nicole Kushner Meyer, the sister of White House adviser and President Trump's son-in-law Jared Kushner, spoke at an event in Beijing on Saturday. She was marketing a Kushner-owned property in New Jersey -- invest in the development and get into the United States on a so-called EB-5 visa.

The EB-5 visa allows immigrants a path to a green card if they invest more than $500,000 in a project that creates jobs in the United States.

An ad for the event, held at a Ritz-Carlton hotel, said "Invest $500,000 and immigrate to the United States."

The EB-5 visa has been used by the Trump and Kushner family businesses. Foreigners, particularly wealthy Chinese nationals, have used the EB-5 program as a ticket into the states. And that promise has helped attract foreign investments for U.S. real estate projects.

President Trump has taken an anti-immigration stance and vowed to severely tighten the use of work visas. The EB-5 program has come under fire by members of Congress on both sides of the aisle.

Lawmakers say the program essentially sells citizenship to high-income foreigners.

Interesting that it was a Democratic led Congress that created this program in 1992. Not surprising a Democrat in Kushner would take advantage of it.

Admittedly I've done EB-5 work here in the Bay Area. We've funded two development projects using EB-5 money as the mezz piece.

Kushner USED to be a democrat .. and for that matter so was Trump.

Neither are democrats today as they sell US citizenships for cash.

This program has been operating for years, even under Obama, but they did not care when their messiah was president.

I've been against this program since it began .. including under Obama, whom I did not vote for.

I'm not against immigration, just favored immigration for sale to people who need it the least.

Congress takes aim at visa program that benefited Trump family businesses

Washington (CNN)Lawmakers from both sides of the aisle signaled Wednesday they've had enough with a visa program as it currently stands -- a program that has been key to at least one Trump family business venture.

At issue is the EB-5 immigrant investment program, which allows foreign investors to pump money into US projects that create jobs and then apply for visas to immigrate to the US.

In a rare issue that unites lawmakers on the left and right, members of Congress have decried the program for essentially selling citizenship to wealthy foreigners -- many of whom are based in China -- although they acknowledge it does have value as a way to spur investment in the US and job growth. EB-5 recipients are eligible to apply for green cards, which could allow them to eventually become US citizens.

It is also an investment program that businesses connected to President Donald Trump and his family have made use of to fund major property developments. Though the White House has not weighed in on the future of the program, a key Democrat at the hearing called for more oversight to ensure the Trump administration's participation would be unaffected.

Trump himself has called for an overhaul of the legal immigration system and a crackdown on illegal immigration as a central component of his presidency. He recently called for a "merit-based" system of immigration.

The EB-5 program is set to expire at the end of April, when government funding runs out. Despite efforts at reform for years, lawmakers have extended the program in continuing resolutions funding the government.

That may no longer happen, lawmakers signaled at a House Judiciary Committee hearing Wednesday morning, as both House and Senate leaders spoke of the need of a major overhaul of the EB-5 program.

I'm fine with any program being reviewed to improve inefficiencies, faults etc. Now I'm biased because I have done EB-5 work but I think the money being to put to investment here in the U.S. is a good thing.

And your point is?

Australia uses the same tactic. The U.S. has lost a great deal of wealth due to it's anti-business / anti-wealth (except for themselves) policies. Encouraging investment in America is a good thing and helps more people. Giving citizenship to 50,000 refugees and a lifetime on welfare doesn't actually help the country.
