The United Kingdom is unusual internationally in that it is one of few countries able to prescribe diamorphine for the treatment of opiate dependence. Prescribing diamorphine has been part of the UK response to drug problems since the 1920s. Despite this, little is known about who receives diamorphine and how treatment is delivered. This study aims to describe the characteristics and treatment regimes of opiate-dependent drug users receiving a prescription for diamorphine in the United Kingdom in 2000, and report on their status in 2002."

"Hi SWITripsBalls, SWIM watched a TV program where a GP licensed to prescribe diamorphine to addicts in the UK used a method of injecting it into cigarettes and letting them dry out before giving the addicts a certain number they were able to use each day. The addicts were able to stop using illicit heroin so we can assume a fair amount got into the system this way, it would be very wasteful, even more so than chasing and is probably only of use if someone wanted to use in a situation where they had to be very discreet. SWIM would rather shoot it or chase it, smoking either in cigarettes or joints isn't suitable for regular use but can be OK when it's not possible to do the other two."

I wouldn't be surprised if Erin Moran was on a morphine drip for her cancer pain.

I know that in some terminal patients they will let them control the drip. I'm pretty sure that gives the patient the power to accidentally or purposefully OD.

generally the older you get, the less you want to have a habit-life goes on and you realize this is a waste of time
So give them the dope, see who sticks to it, but normal attrition means people get their lives back without harm
