Trump says view on Assad, Syria changed after seeing chemical attack

President Trump on Wednesday said the horror of seeing “innocent children, innocent babies” gasping for air after a chemical weapons attack in Syria made him change his attitude “toward Syria and Assad.”

Trump was did not specify if he would change his approach, but he said the chemical attack “crossed a lot of lines for me.” A few days ago, the White House said it would be silly to keep attempting to oust President Assad.

Oh look, my hero Trump refusing to dig his heels in like some liberals I know and change his mind and not have a problem admitting it.

I think it was BAC earlier that called him an idiot or something because of Trump's earlier comments about Syria and I agreed he was hypocritical in blaming Obama, because he would have done nothing different, well, until now.

It is still BS to blame Obama, but at least he is doing the right thing, right? Because I just saw Trump get slammed in the news in the past few days for saying Syria wasn't a big deal etc.

Now what liberals?

I've said more times than I can count that Trump is a pragmatist and not an ideologue: he's not locked-in to a facts on the ground be damned approach to problems like Syria. So it doesn't surprise me that he would re-think his approach.

Syria is a basket case even by Middle East standards.

So then- accepting that it would be remarkably stupid of the Russians, Syrians, Iranians- or indeed the West- to carry out this attack, who else would have the motive ?
Who would like to see the US pushed into the Syrian conflict ?

you can't run a foreign policy by empathy..

Just 3 days ago Tillerson was saying "Assad must go" wasn't operative-
then Trump gets warhawked by his generals and comes out with his "many red lines" CRAP
because of dead babies.

Dead babies are horrific..BUT..WTF do you think has been going on in Syria for the past 6 years?

Look. we have seen this movie over and over, and the ending is always bad ( Libya/Iraq)
Don't expect different consequences from doing the same thing -it's insane

the Dems are salivating about the possibility that Trump will change positions......they don't give a fuck about gassed babies but they are having orgasms about the chance to criticize Trump for warmongering.....

Don't put this on the generals. Just admit that Douchebag Donald is a warmongering neocon. The next thing you know, he'll be dining with McCain and Graham.

Go ahead. Kill the mother fucker. Dust Assad. Try not to bankrupt the treasury in the process. Then tell us who will replace him? ISIL? Russia? The Iranians? Weird Al? Netanyahu?

The attack was brutal, but it wasn't as bad as the previous chemical weapons attack that Assad did in 2013. Far more people died in it.

So why shouldn't we ask the following questions?

Why did Trump have to see pictures of innocent children suffering to change his mind? Did he somehow think that the children and other people killed and injured in the previous attack didn't suffer equally horrendous fates? Why does someone have to see it, you know that is what happens. How did he dismiss it before? Why did this chemical attack "cross the line"? Assad has already crossed the line many times, from the previous chemical attack to illegal barrel bombs which inflict much greater harm to civilians, killing and maiming in grotesque ways.

Who gives a shit? We blew up like, what, 200-300 people a couple weeks ago? Do you think there weren't children in that? How are we any better than Assad?

I don't know. Trump is an opportunist, he will change his opinion at the drop of a hat if it makes him look better.

Question, why didn't Obama do anything, as this crossed his red line in the sand?

Well that is a pretty poor reason to launch a missile strike. It's just an admission that he continues to be a phony on the issue.

He probably should have, beyond the joint resolution to remove their chemical weapons. But he wanted to get the Republicans to agree to it and of course everyone (including Obama) knew they wouldn't.

IIRC, Clinton used missile strikes at OBL to supposedly distract from his impeachment hearings or whatever was going on at that time.

I don't trust Trump enough to believe he had a genuine change of heart. That all of a sudden, he cares about a chemical warfare attack now, when a few years ago, he said we shouldn't intervene after a chemical weapons attack.

Quite honestly, I thought Trump getting elected was due to the powers that be, yes I have a tiny tinfoil hat, anyway, the MIC has in Trump someone who can greatly expand their power.

Why 59 missiles? Why not 40?

I would not be surprised to see the rise of the MIC and Corporate influence in America and the world in the next few years.

That's what the Republican's claimed he did. At least OBL was enemy #1 at the time while in this case Assad had already been relegated off the serious offender list by the Trump admin.

I don't trust he had a change of heart in any way. You shouldn't be surprised about the rise of the MIC, Trump was pushing for a big increase in military spending before the election and his proposed budget confirmed it.
