The Billy Graham Rule!

The so called Billy Graham rule has seen some attention lately in that the VP says he follows it.

Mike Pence refuses to ride in a car, or eat a meal with any single women unless his wife is present.

He also refuses to go to any event where alcoholic beverages are served unless his wife is in attendance.


What are your thoughts about that? What if the best qualified candidate for Chief of Staff was a woman? What if he needed to be briefed on the way to an important meeting and the most knowledgeable person was a woman?

Why cant he trust himself alone with a woman?


My assistant is a woman, we work, eat and even travel together... never once has an inappropriate thing happened.
 
It's about not putting yourself in a position where you can be accused of something inappropriate. Its about being open with his wife (and others) about his interactions with other women. It's not a matter of not being able to "trust himself with a woman."

Don't you just love how people like to try to make the best guy in this administration (I know, my opinion) into something he isn't.

Their marriage, their business. It gets a little difficult to do business with females, but I guess he's worked it out.

it really is an interesting dynamic. Guys travel together on business all the time and no one blinks an eye but when it's a man and a woman somehow it's different.

I think about the Pence scenario from my daughter's perspective. As a capitalist I want her to have the opportunity to do the best she can professionally and make the most money possible if that is her desire. So I don't want her not to be able to network or do what it takes. But I agree with you that their marriage their business.
 
Yeah something like this is his personal business. I highly doubt he'll ever need to be fully alone with another female adminstration member or head of state, so it likely won't affect his job. Besides like most Christians I'm sure he chooses when and where to follow whatever dumb rules he's got.

I'm open with my wife and others about my interactions with women, yet I'll still ride in a car with one, one does not prevent the other.

It's their business, I agree. I also think it's dumb and weak and harmful to women.

People have all different kinds of arangements/agreements in their marriage. At the end of the day it's up to them. They've been married 30 or 40 years while half of married folk get divorced. I don't find that dumb or weak even if it's not something i would do

It's weakness if he can't trust himself.
It's weakness if she can't trust him.
It's weakness if they are worried about appearance just from a car ride.

Billy Graham is from a different time, this "rule" might have made more sense in the 1960's when tge sexes were less equal.

Nice spin Jarod. It's about respecting his wife and then the gossip b.s. that goes on when someone of power is seen with a woman who is not their wife.

It's not just men of power who follow this silliness. It's not about respect unless the wife does not trust him. If people gossip, tell them to go to hell, don't change your life to please them, that's WEAK!

Can Pence ride in a car with a gay man?
What about a gay woman?
What about his daughter? (Someone might get the wrong idea!)

Funny how guy's go to jail because a woman falsely accuses them of rape but hey it's pitiful for a guy to be concerned.
