'Religious left' emerging as U.S. political force in Trump era

Oh boy, here come the anti-Christian infiltrators... Can you say "excommunication"? ;)

(Reuters) - Since President Donald Trump's election, monthly lectures on social justice at the 600-seat Gothic chapel of New York's Union Theological Seminary have been filled to capacity with crowds three times what they usually draw.

In January, the 181-year-old Upper Manhattan graduate school, whose architecture evokes London's Westminster Abbey, turned away about 1,000 people from a lecture on mass incarceration. In the nine years that Reverend Serene Jones has served as its president, she has never seen such crowds.

"The election of Trump has been a clarion call to progressives in the Protestant and Catholic churches in America to move out of a place of primarily professing progressive policies to really taking action," she said.

Although not as powerful as the religious right, which has been credited with helping elect Republican presidents and boasts well-known leaders such as Christian Broadcasting Network founder Pat Robertson, the "religious left" is now slowly coming together as a force in U.S. politics.

This disparate group, traditionally seen as lacking clout, has been propelled into political activism by Trump's policies on immigration, healthcare and social welfare, according to clergy members, activists and academics. A key test will be how well it will be able to translate its mobilization into votes in the 2018 midterm congressional elections.

"It's one of the dirty little secrets of American politics that there has been a religious left all along and it just hasn't done a good job of organizing," said J. Patrick Hornbeck II, chairman of the theology department at Fordham University, a Jesuit school in New York.

"It has taken a crisis, or perceived crisis, like Trump's election to cause folks on the religious left to really own their religion in the public square," Hornbeck said.

with trump defunding a lot of the lefts pet projects and with ice on overdrive the left needs all the help it can get :)

there are a lot of leftist churches out there. Che and Castro used them a lot in south/central america. Have you heard of liberation theology?

Any churches authorized by Marxist states are mere puppets. We have puppet Catholic Churches in China, for example.

The social teaching of Catholic, mainline Protestant and Jewish religions is misleadingly characterized from the political perspective of "left" versus "right" because the axioms and goals of religious social doctrines do not come from the same sources as those of political parties. For example: the preferential option for the poor which is the basis of liberation theology in the Catholic Church, although it may harmonize with the immediate legislative goals of the Democratic Party, does not come from the Declaration of Independence. Social justice and salvation are fellow travelers, not brothers.

Do they baptize their children in blood?

No. But they understand the concepts of loving thy neighbor and not being selfish assholes who begrudge the poor getting a little help at the expense of those who have more.

IOW, basic, fundamental decency.

Unlike the me-first-and-screw-everyone-else right-winger fake CHINOs (CHristians In Name Only).

hey, he cashed his EIC tax refund like every good liberal.......

at this point the vatican has more in common with them than traditional catholisism

I'd say ever since the Vatican was established, the papacy has been able to exercise a level of autonomy that it never held previously. I mean, first there were the 300 years where Christianity was illegal within the Roman Empire. Then, there was the period where it was legal, but had to contend with the emperors. After the Fall, it had to contend with the rise of the European kingdoms, such as Charlemagne's Frankish Empire. Once the Italian republics started forming, the Church lost all political autonomy for several centuries. Finally, starting with the Council of Trent, things slowly started to improve for the next 300 years, until, finally, the settlement with the unified Italy, and Vatican I.

I am not in favor of abortion if that is what you mean.
If one follows the teaching of Jesus though, one cannot possibly support the GOP.

wut why? The GOP is the one actually trying to stop slavery and return people home while the democrats want to continue it for cheap produce. :)
