I'm not saying that's the main reason, it's a profitable tangent.
Why does trump want to expand the military to this extent? I recall rumsfeld et al. supporting a smaller, lighter military: High-technology combat systems; Reliance on air forces; Small, nimble ground forces. Help me understand why we need this huge expansion.
"Trump’s proposals for the military during his presidential campaign were drawn heavily from the conservative Heritage Foundation, and could cost between $55 billion and $90 billion per year, according to outside experts. The plan included adding tens of thousands of soldiers until the service reaches 540,000, expanding the Navy’s fleet to have at least 350 ships, adding about 100 Air Force fighter or attack jets until the service reaches 1,200, and increasing the number of Marine Corps infantry battalions from 24 to 36, which would include thousands of Marines."
Yes, nothing happens in a vaccum.
I actually partly believe Drumpf is a chest pounding belligerent gorilla who just views military strength as an extension of his ego, in much the same way Stalin, Mussolini, and other authoritarians did.
But any sentient and informed human being also realizes that the military industrial complex serves the interests of powerful people. And one of the most powerful forces supporting military build ups and arms races is the profit motive. To me, the extent to which the Orange Clown personally profits is besides the point. He, his family, or his friends in the top 1 percent benefit directly or indirectly from a militarized America.
