feb 28 2017 On Tuesday, Apple investors overwhelmingly rejected a proposal that would have urged the company to ramp up its efforts to hire African Americans, Latinos and other people of color for its board of directors and senior management positions. As is the case at many tech companies, members of such groups have been underrepresented at Apple compared with the general population.

The vote marked the second year in a row shareholders have rejected the proposal, which called for Apple to have an “accelerated recruitment policy” to diversify its leadership ranks. Because it received less than 6 percent of shareholder votes this year, Apple can block it from appearing on its proxy ballot next year, supporters noted.

Only 4.91 percent of shares were voted in favor of the diversity proposal, according to Zevin and Maldonado. Investors representing some 95.09 percent of Apple shares voted against it.

Apple representatives did not immediately respond to an emailed request for comment. But in the proxy statement the company sent to investors in January, it urged shareholders to reject the proposal, arguing that it was already taking significant steps to diversify its workforce and help train women and minority workers for jobs in tech. It also argued that it already releases detailed information about the diversity of its workforce.

I've mentioned before the tech job I worked at in the Silicon Valley before my current job had about 70 people. One black person, about 20 white people and the other 50 were Asian and Indian. So on paper an extremely diverse group but as far as those considered under represented minorities extremely low.

Now I know with Apple they are talking about board positions which is a different conversation.

I find it interesting that some will argue against H1-B visas claiming it lowers American's pay but are fine with lower educated immigrants saying they don't have an economic impact on workers.

I think there are more programmers, analysts, DBA's and other tech workers who have spoken out against H1-B visas then liberals. That cuts across political lines.

I was coming more from the perspective you won't hear liberals make the economic argument against lower educated immigrants but you will for H1-B visa immigrants.

Low paid workers are often working jobs that few others want. The impact and dynamic of low paid workers vs higher paid workers are not the same.

It may look like the same arguments on paper, but in realty they aren't.

What about the argument that Americans don't want to do those jobs at low wages, not that they won't do those jobs?
