Retired Vice Admiral Robert Harward has turned down an offer from President Donald Trump to be national security adviser - saying he couldn't give the commitment necessary for the job - raising new questions whether a White House in turmoil can find ...

Can you blame him?

In Trump's first solo news conference yesterday, he boasted his administration is running smoothly.

How many administrations have included the firing of a cabinet officer during the first month in office?
 
How the chief executive puts together his cabinet and staff are usually a President leader first test. Right now the controversy over Flyn's resignation is alarming.

We have clear evidence that a foreign nation has deliberately interfered in our elections and clear evidence that Trump administration officials colluded with Russian intelligence prior to taking office. It is highly unlikely given Flyns understanding and respect for chain of command that he would have done so on his own.

So what the American people want to know is "What did the President know and when did he know it?".

This is what Nixon was asked on Watergate, Reagan on Iran/Contra and Clinton on Lewinski.

This a fair question and if Trump has any survival sense he will take a chapter out of Reagans book and proactively cooperate with an independent investigation as this has the potential to become the biggest political scandal in US history with enormous constitutional consequences.

Good idea Mott. But....
 
...but nothing. Look at what happened to Clinton. The Monica Leqinsky scandal was in no way, shape or form as significant as either the Watergate Scandal or the Iran/Contra affair. Yet because Clinton refused to cooperate with investigators, repeatedly lied about an inconsequential (legally speaking) but embarrassing affair and convinced himself he had done no wrong and this was all the work of his political enemies he set himself up for his own impeachment even if it was a purely partisan affair. In the process he permanently damaged his reputation and his legacy, all of which could have been prevented had he cooperated with investigators, like Reagan did, during the Iran/Contra affair which as orders of magnitudes more significant than the sordid Lewinsky affair.

Trump would be well advised to follow Ronald Reagans lead on this, that is, unless he really does have something to hide from the American people.

I agree, but 45 isn't that bright, plus, my gut tells me he's dirty.
 
It will boil down to Trump denying he had anything to do with it, it was simply a conspiracy cooked up by his team without telling him about it.

Well you know the old saying...it's not the transgression that kills you it's the cover up? Though there's no evidence to date that there is any sort of cover up.

But was it determinative? Would Hillary have won otherwise?

Though I haven't found one continuous analysis of it, I gather the Russians did some snooping, but didn't have much affect on the election outcome one way or another.

Groucho Marx said he'd never want to be a member of any organization that would accept his application.
I don't know much about Harward. But since declining the post, my estimation of him has improved.

Regarding President Trump:

DJ seems have a severe deficiency of guile.
His whining yesterday about what a mess he inherited from Obama: what the $#@! would Trump have said if his inauguration was in 2009, when Obama's was?

Trump takes over a substantially more stable nation than the one Bush left to Obama. And to me, Trump whining about it makes Trump look weak, ineffectual, and immature. It's the U.S. presidency! Did Trump think it would be like an Assistant Manager's job on the night shift at Piggly Wiggly?

Trumph will not come close to finishing his term and may well end up in prison with Flynn...

What clear evidence is this, again?

Actually, I would say that the biggest failure of Trump's cabinet arrangement, thus far, is the withdrawal of Putzder from consideration for Labour Secretary. Supposedly, his open borders advocacy, which put him out of touch with Trump, was the reason. It seems to me that either Trump should have known this and not selected Putzder to begin with, or he knew and wanted some differing opinions built around him, in which case the man shouldn't be expected to withdraw from consideration.
