PYONGYANG PUSHERS: North Korea slams 'traitors' as Kim's drug trade exposed.
North Korea has furiously slammed claims that its diplomats are smuggling contraband, including drugs, to pay for Kim’s runaway nuke program.
Senior defectors from the hermit kingdom claim the goods are stashed in diplomatic bags, which customs officials are reluctant to check.
And with North Korea’s drugs empire said to stretch to meth and opium – a raw ingredient in heroin – it could mean big bucks for Kim.
Escaped diplomat Hong Soon-kyung said North Korea even smuggled illegal rhino horn, bought from poachers by its African envoys.
But now Kim’s man in Europe, Alejandro Cao de Benos, has hit out at the claims – and dismissed the fleeing diplomats as lying "traitors".
Mr Cao de Benos, who is a special representative of Kim’s regime, saved particular fury for North Korea’s escaped London diplomat Thae Yong-ho.
He told Daily Star Online: "There are hundreds of stupid allegations about North Korea every day. Its officials are and must be servants of the people.
But being human beings, sometimes a few of them commit faults and become greedy, especially when under the influence of the wealthiest 1% of British people. Thae Yong-ho is a disgraced person that got used to living in luxury at the UK embassy, while many people there suffer from poverty and drug addiction, and beg in the streets.
Being a traitor to his country and giving himself to the South Korean intelligence agency, the only work he can perform now is that of a propaganda person, saying all kinds of rubbish."
Despite the claims of Mr Cao de Benos, Mr Thae says he only earned $1,000 (£800) a month at the embassy – wages which left the diplomats desperate for another source of income.
Mr Thae has also denied any criminal activity himself, saying it was too risky in the UK, though he admits that embassy staff regularly ignored London’s congestion charge.
However Kim Hyeong-soo, who worked for North Korea’s secretive Office 38 – which is responsible for Kim Jong-un’s slush fund, said diplomats were key to smuggling.
"They were the sales channels and so once they go abroad they would sell these kinds of illegal drugs and sometimes get caught," he told Daily Star Online.
